Gov’t-IMF Talks Focus on Tax Reforms, Energy Debt, and Cedi Stability

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Ghana’s Finance Minister

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Ghana’s newly appointed Finance Minister, has assured Ghanaians of the Mahama administration’s commitment to tackling the nation’s pressing economic challenges.

In a statement following parliamentary approval, Dr. Forson emphasized the government’s resolve to bring down inflation, stabilize the Cedi, create jobs, and promote inclusive growth. His assurances come at a time when the country faces significant economic pressures, with citizens eagerly awaiting transformative solutions.

Expressing gratitude for his appointment, Dr. Forson stated, “I am deeply humbled and grateful to the Almighty God for this opportunity to serve Ghana in the capacity of Finance Minister.” He extended thanks to President John Dramani Mahama, Parliament, and the Ghanaian people for entrusting him with the critical responsibility of steering the nation’s economy. “As I assume this high office, I assure all Ghanaians that I am committed to serving with humility, integrity, diligence, and transparency,” he added, emphasizing his commitment to fostering unity and resilience in addressing the nation’s challenges.

Dr. Forson outlined his key priorities, which include reducing inflation and stabilizing the Cedi to ensure a stable economic environment for businesses and households. Inflation, which erodes the purchasing power of Ghanaians, remains a significant concern, while the fluctuating Cedi continues to affect trade and investments. Dr. Forson expressed optimism that with concerted efforts, these issues can be addressed effectively, laying a strong foundation for economic recovery and growth.

The Finance Minister also highlighted the administration’s focus on job creation and fostering inclusive growth. “Together, we will work to bring down inflation, stabilize the Cedi, create jobs, foster inclusive growth, and create opportunities for all Ghanaians,” he assured. By prioritizing initiatives that promote sustainable development, the government aims to create an enabling environment where businesses can thrive, and citizens can access meaningful employment opportunities.

Ghana Open for Business

Reiterating the government’s openness to collaboration, Dr. Forson invited partnerships and investments that would drive Ghana’s development agenda. “Let me emphasize that Ghana is open for business. We welcome partnerships and investments that will drive sustainable development and prosperity for all,” he stated. This call for collaboration signals a shift towards building a robust economy anchored on private sector engagement and international cooperation.

Dr. Forson’s commitment to transparency and diligence aligns with the administration’s broader goals of restoring public confidence in governance. By fostering accountability and efficiency, the government aims to create a conducive climate for economic activities and attract both local and foreign investors.

Dr. Forson’s appointment, alongside those of Dr. Dominic Ayine as Minister for Justice and Attorney General and John Jinapor as Minister for Energy, marks the beginning of a broader strategy under President Mahama’s administration to address critical national issues. The three nominees, approved by Parliament on Tuesday, January 21, represent a team of competent individuals tasked with driving the country’s development.

Each minister has a critical role to play in achieving the administration’s vision. While Dr. Forson focuses on stabilizing the economy, Dr. Ayine is expected to strengthen the legal framework to support justice and governance, and John Jinapor will oversee efforts to transform the energy sector. Together, their efforts are expected to complement one another, creating a cohesive and integrated approach to national development.

In his remarks, Dr. Forson emphasized the need for unity, resilience, and hard work to achieve the government’s objectives. He called on all Ghanaians to work together in building a prosperous nation. “With unity, resilience, and hard work, I believe we can achieve great things for our beloved country,” he said, concluding his speech with a call for collective action.

The Finance Minister’s vision reflects a commitment to inclusive governance and sustainable development. His focus on reducing inflation, stabilizing the Cedi, and creating jobs underscores the administration’s determination to address the economic concerns of ordinary Ghanaians. As the Mahama administration moves forward, the leadership of Dr. Forson and his colleagues will be pivotal in shaping Ghana’s economic trajectory and ensuring shared prosperity for all.
