GNPC CEO Strengthens Explorco for Oil Sector Growth

Hon. Edward Abambire Bawa, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), recently undertook a significant familiarization visit to GNPC Explorco, the Corporation’s wholly owned upstream subsidiary.

The visit facilitated a direct engagement with the leadership and technical teams, providing Hon. Bawa with a comprehensive understanding of Explorco’s operational landscape. This initiative underscores GNPC’s unwavering commitment to enhancing the subsidiary’s efficiency as a distinct exploration and production (E&P) entity.

During his address, Hon. Bawa reaffirmed his firm belief in the strategic rationale behind establishing Explorco, emphasizing that its creation was one of GNPC’s most crucial decisions.

He highlighted that a dedicated subsidiary focused exclusively on exploration and production significantly strengthens Ghana’s standing in the global oil and gas industry.

“Explorco was founded with a visionary mission to emerge as Ghana’s premier indigenous exploration and production company.

“It is incumbent upon us to ensure the fulfillment of this vision by endowing the subsidiary with the requisite autonomy, resources, and strategic alliances to thrive in the sector.”

Furthermore, he stressed the importance of insulating Explorco from political influences while securing governmental support to foster its transformation into a fully autonomous and commercially viable entity.

He noted that operational independence, robust governance frameworks, and strategic partnerships are essential in solidifying Explorco’s competitiveness and ensuring its long-term success.

A key focal point of discussions was the transformative Voltaian Basin Project, identified by Hon. Bawa as a game-changer for Ghana’s energy sector.

He emphasized the project’s vast potential for revenue generation, employment creation, and economic stimulation, urging intensified efforts toward its successful execution.

The CEO called on the Explorco team to remain resolute in actualizing the company’s long-term vision and positioning it as a leading stakeholder in Ghana’s upstream oil and gas sector.

Looking beyond exploration and production, Hon. Bawa charged Explorco with integrating community outreach and development initiatives into its operational framework.

He highlighted the necessity of incorporating social and environmental sustainability considerations into all aspects of the company’s activities to ensure responsible resource exploitation.

He stressed that sustainable development and corporate responsibility must be at the core of Explorco’s operational ethos.

“It is crucial that we uphold the highest standards of environmental stewardship while ensuring that our host communities benefit from our activities.”

Managing Director of Explorco, Mr. Michael Aryeetey, extended a warm reception to Mr. Bawa and commended his appointment. He expressed enthusiasm for collaborating closely with GNPC’s leadership to drive sustainable growth in Ghana’s energy sector.

Providing a succinct overview of Explorco’s inception, Mr. Aryeetey elaborated on its foundational mandate and its strategic growth trajectory. He highlighted the subsidiary’s role in optimizing Ghana’s oil and gas resources while maintaining industry best practices.

“Our achievements are contingent upon collaboration, innovation, and operational excellence.

“With the steadfast support of GNPC’s leadership, I am confident that we can position Explorco as a formidable and competitive E&P entity, imparting substantial value to Ghana’s oil and gas landscape.”

The visit marks a significant milestone in the collaborative effort between GNPC and Explorco, setting the stage for a future defined by innovation, efficiency, and sustainable growth in Ghana’s upstream petroleum industry.
