Afenyo-Markin’s Vetting Performance Sparks Debate

Afenyo-Markin's on NPP defeat

Hon. Alexander Afenyo Markin

Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has commended the performance of Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin on the Appointment Committee, applauding his approach as both strategic and effective.

Boakye-Danquah emphasized that Afenyo-Markin’s method of questioning has played a crucial role in allowing ministerial nominees to articulate their qualifications, experiences, and vision clearly.

He noted that the Minority Leader’s approach fosters a constructive vetting process, enabling nominees to showcase their competencies rather than being subjected to adversarial scrutiny.

“I have watched this multiple times. I have been following the Appointment Committee since its inception. I want to immediately commend Leader for always bringing out the best in most of the nominees and his line of questions.”

He pointed to Afenyo-Markin’s approach during the vetting of the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Hon. Emelia Arthur, as a clear demonstration of his effectiveness.

He specifically recalled how Afenyo-Markin framed his question, drawing from Arthur’s personal and professional journey.

Referring to the Minority Leader’s remarks, Boakye-Danquah seized on the question, “Reading from your CV, what advice do you have for the young people of Ghana on perseverance?”

He emphasized that this question was closely linked to Arthur’s personal journey—her political defeats in the 1990s, her transition into development work, and her eventual rise to a ministerial role.

He noted that by highlighting resilience and perseverance, Afenyo-Markin underscored a crucial lesson for Ghanaian youth while demonstrating a thorough understanding of the nominee’s background.

Boakye-Danquah also pointed out how Afenyo-Markin shared his personal experiences regarding patience, reinforcing the importance of perseverance for young Ghanaians.

However, he lamented that the Chairman of the Appointment Committee had “denied us Ghanaians the opportunity to really know and learn how this Akpli dance is.”

He further expressed concerns over the perceived lack of fairness in certain aspects of the vetting process, suggesting that some nominees were given more favorable treatment than others.

Public Poll Shows Divided Sentiment

While Boakye-Danquah praised Afenyo-Markin’s performance, recent data from a Global InfoAnalytics poll suggests a starkly different public perception.

Mussa Dankwah, Executive Director of the research firm, disclosed that only 36% of respondents approved of Afenyo-Markin’s performance on the Appointment Committee.

In contrast, a significant 64% expressed dissatisfaction, highlighting a clear disconnect between political endorsements and public sentiment.

“The poll shows that NPP voters are divided as 51% say they were not satisfied with his performance while 49% say they are satisfied.

“87% of NDC voters, as expected, are dissatisfied with his performance while 13% say they are satisfied. For floating voters, the poll shows that 84% are not satisfied while 16% are satisfied.”

Mussa Dankwah

Dankwah advised Afenyo-Markin to take into account the concerns of his own party’s supporters and floating voters while ignoring criticisms from the opposition.

“My advice to Afenyo-Markin is, to disregard the views of NDC voters because they are partisan, but he should not disregard the views of his own party and floating voters.”

Mussa Dankwah

He also raised concerns about whether Afenyo-Markin valued public opinion, pointing to his apparent disregard for the survey results.

Despite receiving only 36% approval for his performance on the Appointment Committee, he did not acknowledge or address the public’s feedback.

Dankwah argued that such silence from a key political figure raises questions about accountability and responsiveness to the very people he serves.

Political analysts suggest that Afenyo-Markin’s ability to balance his role as a firm yet fair vetter will be crucial in shaping his political reputation.

Some believe his approach demonstrates professionalism and rigor, while others argue it falls short of expectations. As the debate over his performance continues, the bigger question remains:

The key question is whether Afenyo-Markin will take these criticisms seriously and modify his approach or remain steadfast in his current methods, convinced of their effectiveness.
