At the annual New Year Greetings with the Diplomatic Corps held at Jubilee House, President John Dramani Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s unwavering commitment to fostering international partnerships and strengthening diplomatic ties.
Addressing ambassadors, high commissioners, and representatives of international organizations, the President emphasized the importance of cooperation in tackling global and domestic challenges.
“In today’s globalised and complex world, our faiths are inextricably intertwined. This fact cannot be overstated. The relationships that we forge will ripple through time, influencing the trajectory of our nations and the quality of lives of our people.
“I take this opportunity to express my deep appreciation to your excellency, Mr. Meherkia, Your leadership serves as a reminder that diplomacy is not solely about negotiation. It is also about cultivating enduring relationships.”

Reflecting on Ghana’s diplomatic strides, President Mahama highlighted key accomplishments, including Ghana’s election to the United Nations Human Rights Council for a three-year term, its chairmanship of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors, and its leadership at the 67th session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs.
“These roles present unique opportunities for Ghana to champion the promotion and protection of human rights globally while advancing the peaceful use of nuclear energy to address food security, climate change, epidemics, and energy sustainability”.

Additionally, Ghana’s full membership in the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) underscores its commitment to regional cooperation and linguistic diversity, facilitating expanded trade and investment opportunities.
The President also acknowledged the historic election of Ghana’s immediate past Foreign Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, as the seventh Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, a development that solidifies Ghana’s growing prominence in multilateral diplomacy.
President Mahama further announced Ghana’s endorsement of Ambassador Mohammed Adam for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), seeking support from partner countries in the upcoming elections in Madrid in May 2025.
Gratitude to Diplomatic Partners and Observers
Expressing appreciation to members of the diplomatic corps, President Mahama recognized their contributions to strengthening bilateral and multilateral relations.
He extended a warm welcome to newly appointed heads of mission, emphasizing the crucial role of diplomacy in global stability and economic growth.
To international observers who monitored Ghana’s 2024 elections, Mahama conveyed deep gratitude, underscoring Ghana’s commitment to democratic principles.
“The recent national elections, during which Ghanaians overwhelmingly voted for a change, bear testimony once again to this reputation. It is both an honor and a privilege to be entrusted with the mandate of our people during this transformative period in our nation’s history.
“Our democracy thrives on active participation, and it is crucial that every voice is heard as we chart a new path forward.”

Economic Revitalization and the 24-Hour Economy Initiative
Addressing Ghana’s economic outlook, President Mahama reaffirmed his government’s commitment to tackling macroeconomic and social challenges, announcing the introduction of a 24-hour economy initiative aimed at maximizing productivity and generating sustainable employment across multiple sectors.
“This initiative seeks to maximize economic productivity and infrastructure utilization while generating sustainable employment opportunities across multiple shifts.
“Key sectors such as agro-processing, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, construction, and transport services will greatly benefit from this policy, leading to a thriving economy that works for everyone and not a select few. We recognize the vital role of export development as a key driver of economic growth”.

He also emphasized the government’s focus on export development as a key driver of economic growth. The establishment of an Accelerated Export Development Program, which Mahama pledged to personally chair, aims to enhance Ghana’s export capacity and market accessibility.
Additionally, he reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Ghana’s Diaspora and Migration Policies
Acknowledging the critical role of Ghanaians abroad in national development, President Mahama emphasized initiatives to strengthen engagement with the diaspora.
He announced ongoing efforts to finalize bilateral labor agreements to protect Ghanaian migrant workers from exploitation and ensure ethical recruitment practices.
“We are also in the process of finalizing additional agreements to enhance protection and support for migrant workers. Furthermore, we will launch the Ghana Labor Export Program, allowing skilled Ghanaian workers to gain international experience while contributing to economic development.”

On security matters, President Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s dedication to regional stability through active engagement in the African Union (AU) and ECOWAS.
He emphasized the need for a fortified border security strategy, citing rising threats of terrorism and the growing security challenges facing the Sahel region.
“The safety of our nation is intertwined with the security of our neighbors. By working with our Sahelian partners, we can reinforce collective efforts to ensure peace and stability in our sub-region, which is crucial for the prosperity of all our nations.”

He also stressed Ghana’s commitment to climate action and sustainable development, reaffirming collaboration with international partners to address pressing global issues.
President Mahama reiterated that good governance remains the bedrock of Ghana’s foreign policy, ensuring transparency, accountability, and efficiency in diplomatic engagements.
He urged all diplomatic missions, consulates, and international organizations to adhere to established diplomatic protocols, fostering constructive and efficient collaboration.
“It is through dialogue, collaboration, and collective action that we can navigate the complexities of our times and emerge stronger, united, and more resilient as a people”.

Concluding his address, President Mahama raised a toast to the prosperity and continued cooperation between Ghana and its international partners.
