Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has held discussions with senior officers of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the aftermath of the devastating fire that ravaged parts of Adum PZ in Kumasi.

The meeting, aimed at assessing the response efforts and reinforcing future fire prevention strategies, underscored the need for strengthened coordination between emergency agencies and local authorities.

“I received the Fire Service Commander and his senior officers to discuss and receive updates on the recent fire incident at Adum PZ in Kumasi.

“I expressed my gratitude for their dedication and collaborative efforts in managing the situation, despite initial challenges. They reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding our communities, and I assured them of my continued support”

The meeting focused on three critical areas: the formation of a task force and rapid response unit, personnel reinforcement, and logistical support.

Dr. Amoakohene outlined plans to establish a specialized unit that would integrate the Fire Service, the Ghana Police Service, and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO).

This unit, he explained, would not only enforce fire safety regulations but also ensure “ensure compliance with fire safety regulations and to create accessible vehicular routes in the PZ area.”

This will make sure emergency service vehicles have unrestricted access to fire-prone areas to prevent a repeat of the accessibility challenges encountered by the fire-fighters who responded to the Adum PZ fire.

Beyond enforcement, the minister also stressed the need for a proactive approach to fire prevention through public education.

He committed to working with relevant national agencies to deploy personnel from the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) and the National Service Scheme (NSS) to support fire safety education, public engagement, and operational duties.

Commitment to Logistical Support

Addressing concerns over the availability of resources for fire service operations, Dr. Amoakohene assured the officers that the government was taking concrete steps to address logistical challenges.

He conveyed assurances on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama and Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mubarak, “that steps will be taken to provide the necessary logistical support to enhance their operations.”

The minister plans to provide the necessary equipment and infrastructure to enhance firefighting capacity in the region.

His commitment to improved fire service logistics comes amid growing concerns over the ability of emergency responders to effectively tackle large-scale fires in commercial hubs such as Kumasi.

The Adum PZ fire, which reportedly destroyed significant property, has reignited discussions about the adequacy of firefighting resources and urban planning deficiencies that hinder emergency response efforts.

Strengthening Institutional Cooperation

Following comments made by a member of the National Fire Service’s Public Relations team based at the National Headquarters in Accra, the National Commander of the Fire Service has called to apologize.

They reaffirmed the institution’s dedication to maintaining a collaborative relationship with stakeholders in fire management and disaster response.

The comments which warranted an apology to the minister came during his presence at the fire site, when a fire service personnel, harshly told him that “shouting does not quench fire.”

Another distasteful comment was made when the Ashanti Regional fire commander, ACFO Peter Tetteh later remarked on an interview about the altercation that ensued between the minister and the fire service staff.

The apology signals a renewed effort by the Fire Service to ensure professional conduct in engagements with government officials and the public.

The National Headquarters is expected to handle any internal disciplinary measures arising from the incident while maintaining focus on the broader goal of improving emergency response and fire safety measures in Ghana.

A Call for Collective Action

The regional minister expressed deep appreciation to the Fire Service and other security agencies for their tireless work in managing the challenges posed by the Adum PZ fire incident.

He emphasized the need for a collective approach to emergency preparedness, urging residents, business owners, and authorities to prioritize fire safety measures.

“Together, we will strengthen our emergency response mechanisms to better protect our communities,” he stated.

The fire at Adum PZ has once again highlighted the urgent need for stronger enforcement of fire safety regulations, better urban planning, and improved resource allocation for emergency response teams.

In response, the government moves to implement reforms and interventions in preventing future disasters.
