Actor Calls for Safety Reforms in the African Film Industry

Van Vicker

Ghanaian actor, Van Vicker, has taken to social media to applaud President John Dramani Mahama amid the recent Ghana cedi’s appreciation against the US dollar.

The renowned thespian shared a post alongside a photo of the President about the cedi’s appreciation.

“Mr. President, I must congratulate you on the strengthening of the Ghana cedi on the World market, ayekoo. ‘I no no weytin you do or weytin you dey do, but I beg, dey fire dat tin noo’. I like am.”

Van Vicker

The actor’s comment comes in reaction to the notable cedi’s appreciation, moving from approximately GH₵17 to $1 a few months ago to around GH₵11 to $1 currently.

While the exact cause of the cedi’s gain remains debated, Van Vicker listed some of the circulating theories, including: US trade wars, the Ghanaian government’s reduced spending, a lawsuit against the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, an increase in the supply of dollars, a forex trend inherited from a previous administration, Sheer luck, and “Good radiance of whatever”

“The true reason could be a consolidation of two or more of these theories, but be that as it may, the fact remains that the Ghana Cedi is approximately GHC11 to $1 TODAY.”

He also criticized some Ghanaians living abroad for expressing disappointment over the dollar’s decline against the cedi, describing such sentiments as narcissistic. According to him, the current trend is a positive sign for Ghana’s economy.

Van Vicker further wrote: “Your Excellency JM, if you can take us back to 2007, heerrrh like e go be ‘kerker’.”

He was quick to clarify that his comments were not politically motivated but an honest acknowledgment of progress.

“This is not a political statement. It is an acknowledgement of a good job done so far. Call a spade a spade. Give credit to whom credit is due. Long live Ghana.”

Van Vicker

His remarks have drawn attention as the cedi continues to strengthen, sparking public discussion about the factors driving the improvement and how sustainable it will be in the months ahead.

Award-winning Ghanaian musician, Kuami Eugene, pleaded with President John Dramani Mahama to halt the cedi’s appreciation against the dollar.

Eugene shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) to voice out his concerns with the current trajectory of the Ghana cedi on the exchange market.

Since the start of April, the Ghana cedi has strongly appreciated against its major trading partners, particularly the dollar.

Many Ghanaians, particularly those based abroad, have voiced their concerns over the cedi’s appreciation, which has made sending forex back home to Ghana much more expensive.

On his Twitter account, Kuami Eugene said most of the dollar reserves he has saved over the years have lost all their value.

The 2020 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) Artist of the Year winner added that his cash reserves are losing value.

“We beg Pres. @JDMahama for slow down small, my dollar reserves all dey go waste. I’m happy and sad at the same time.”

Kuami Eugene echoed the cries of other Ghanaians with mixed feelings about the cedi’s appreciation.

U.S.-based Ghanaian Kevin Taylor similarly praised the Mahama administration for its good work that has raised the cedi’s value.

Taylor lamented that while impressive, the drop in the dollar’s value is too much, as it presents challenges when it comes to sending money back home.

He said Ghanaians voted for the NDC to reduce the cedi-dollar imbalance but are now begging for the current rate of Gh₵ 10 to be maintained for some time.

Ghanaians shared varied reactions to Kuami Eugene’s complaints about the cedi’s appreciation against the dollar.

“Don’t worry, Kuami.”
