The second most decorated German football team, Borussia Dortmund has officially signed talented midfielder Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland on a five-year deal that extends until June 2030.
Sunderland announced that this transfer is a record sale for the club, with the fee estimated at around €32 million (£26.96 million), plus an additional €5 million (£4.2 million) in potential bonuses.
The agreement highlights Bellingham’s esteemed reputation across Europe and emphasizes Dortmund’s ongoing dedication to developing young players.
Jobe Bellingham joined Sunderland in 2023 and quickly established himself as an essential player for the team.
In just one season, he made 90 appearances for the Black Cats, winning over fans with his dynamic performances, smart positioning, and adaptability in midfield.

His impact was crucial in aiding Sunderland’s promotion to the Premier League during the 2024/25 season, a notable achievement given the club’s recent difficulties.
In a heartfelt statement released upon the announcement of his departure, Bellingham expressed gratitude for the support he received at Sunderland.
“I will always represent Wearside in all that I strive to achieve for the rest of my career, wherever that may be.” He said. Bellingham was awarded the Championship Young Player of the Season for his performances during Sunderland’s promotion-winning campaign.
His Football Journey
Bellingham began his football journey at Birmingham City, where he came through the academy ranks.
He made his senior debut for the Blues at just 16 and spent two seasons in the Championship, showcasing the technical ability and maturity beyond his years that first caught the attention of top clubs.
His move to Sunderland gave him more regular first-team football, and he thrived under the pressure and expectations that came with playing for a club with a large and passionate fan base.
His arrival at Dortmund signals a new chapter in his career, and the Bundesliga side will be hoping to repeat the success they had with Jude Bellingham, who joined them from Birmingham in 2020 and became one of the best midfielders in Europe before moving to Real Madrid.
Jobe’s move adds to Dortmund’s tradition of developing young English players, following in the footsteps of not only Jude but also Jadon Sancho and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens.

For Sunderland, while losing a key player is a blow, the record-breaking fee provides significant resources as they prepare for their return to the top flight.
The club has stated that the funds will be reinvested into strengthening the squad and building a competitive team capable of staying in the Premier League.
Appreciation For Jobe Bellingham
Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman, who worked with both Bellingham brothers during his time at Birmingham, praised Jobe’s contribution to the club.
“Jobe has shown incredible maturity and professionalism during his time here. His talent is undeniable, and we’re proud to have played a part in his development. We wish him all the best in this exciting new challenge”.

Since the deal was finalised by June 10 2025, Bellingham is eligible to participate in the Club World Cup for Dortmund, which starts on Sunday. Dortmund’s first group match is against the Brazilian team Fluminense on June 17 at 17:00 BST.

Bellingham has been selected for the England squad for the European Under-21 Championship, taking place in Slovakia from June 11-28.
However, head coach Lee Carsley has stated that he will release players to allow them to participate in the Club World Cup in the United States.
Bellingham is following in the footsteps of his older brother Jude by moving to the Bundesliga, as the England midfielder who also came through the Birmingham City youth academy spent three years with Dortmund before transferring to Real Madrid in 2023.
