Prof. Francis Hasford Appointed Deputy Director General of GAEC

Prof. Francis Hasford, New Deputy Director General of GAEC

The Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) has announced the appointment of Prof. Francis Hasford as its new Deputy Director General, effective Monday, June 16, 2025.

The appointment follows the retirement of his predecessor, Prof. Dickson Adomako, who served the Commission with distinction for over two decades.

Prof. Hasford’s elevation comes at a critical time in Ghana’s nuclear development agenda, with GAEC intensifying its role in using nuclear science and technology to drive socioeconomic growth across the country and subregion.

Prof. Hasford brings to the role an impressive career in nuclear science, with more than 17 years of experience as a medical physicist.

“Prior to assuming his current appointment, he was Head of Department of Medical Physics at the Graduate School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences (SNAS), University of Ghana and the Director of the Radiological and Medical Sciences Research Institute, GAEC.”

His international profile includes his current position as President of the Federation of African Medical Physics Organizations (FAMPO), Executive Committee Member of the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP), and a Project Counterpart with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

He also serves as Vice President of the Ghana Society for Medical Physics and is an executive member of the Ghana Young Academy.

Prof. Hasford’s previous leadership at RAMSRI led to the successful establishment of GAEC’s flagship programme on cancer awareness and free screening—an initiative that has directly impacted thousands of Ghanaians through early detection and education.

He has also played a key role in shaping national and institutional policy through his service on various committees focused on research, training, and mentorship.

In his new role, Prof. Hasford is expected to help steer the Commission towards greater innovation and operational efficiency, particularly in the peaceful applications of nuclear science in sectors like energy, health, agriculture, and environmental management.

The Ghana Atomic Energy Commission is the country’s leading institution for nuclear science and technology, mandated to harness atomic energy for peaceful purposes to support national development.

Speaking at GAEC’s mid-year staff durbar, Director General Prof. Samuel Boakye Dampare officially introduced Prof. Hasford to staff and expressed his confidence in the new appointee’s leadership capabilities.

“Prof. Hasford is well endowed with visionary leadership and deep technical knowledge in nuclear science and the workings of GAEC.

“He will be an invaluable addition to the team as we advance our strategic objectives of using nuclear science to better the lives of Ghanaians.”

His appointment has been widely welcomed within Ghana’s scientific community, particularly as the country moves to expand its peaceful nuclear energy capacity and bolster its contributions to global nuclear research and development.

The Ghana Atomic Energy Commission has long championed the use of nuclear technology for peaceful and developmental purposes.

Prof. Hasford’s appointment is expected to reinforce this mandate and accelerate GAEC’s efforts in research, innovation, and public education.

From cancer diagnostics to food preservation, environmental monitoring to potential nuclear energy deployment, Prof. Hasford’s leadership promises to usher in a new phase of technological modernization for GAEC and its partner institutions.

With Prof. Francis Hasford stepping into his new leadership role, GAEC is poised for greater innovations in medical physics, radiation research, and nuclear energy development.

His strong credentials and commitment to nuclear advancement signal an exciting new era for Ghana’s atomic energy initiatives.
