Heath Goldfields

The Heath Goldfields, the mining company responsible for the Bogoso-Prestea mine site, has announced the commencement of its operational activities. After a period of dormancy, the company is now poised to breathe new life into the once-thriving mining hub, bolstering Ghana’s economic prospects.

According to Patrick Appiah Mensah, the Managing Director of the Bogoso-Prestea Mine, the company’s operations have already begun, with the team focusing on dewatering the underground pits and testing the process plant.

“We are pumping 12 million litres of water on a daily basis, and we expect to reach the 24 level by the end of the first quarter.”

Patrick Appiah Mensah, Managing Director

The company has made significant investments to revive the mine, with the Managing Director Mensah disclosing that “about 75 million dollars have been spent and some of them committed to revive the mine.”

The extensive capital injection has been tailored towards ensuring the underground pits are safe for operation and upgrading the process plant, which has already begun test runs, he added.

The Bogoso-Prestea mine has long been a crucial asset in Ghana’s mining landscape, but its operations had been halted in recent years.

The revival of this mine under the leadership of Heath Goldfields marks a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to revitalize its mining industry and capitalize on its natural resources.

The resumption also possessed huge economic benefits as large numbers residents and other technocrats are expected to be employed.

As the company prepares to fully resume operations, it has already begun to create employment opportunities for the local community.

“we’ve given employment to currently about 700 people between our employees at HIPGO fields and then that of our business partners that are operating the mine.”

Patrick Appiah Mensah, Managing Director

This influx of jobs not only benefits the individuals and their families but also contributes to the overall economic development of the region.

The revitalization of the Bogoso-Prestea mine is expected to have a ripple effect, stimulating various industries and creating a more prosperous future for the surrounding communities.

Safety and Environmental Sustainability

In addition to the operational and infrastructure upgrades, Heath Goldfields has placed a strong emphasis on safety and environmental sustainability. Mensah reassured that “the Prestea underground is in healthy condition” and that “there is no risk of a failure because of the water situation.”

This commitment to responsible mining practices underlines with the government’s broader initiatives to promote eco-friendly and socially conscious mining activities particularly at the critical juncture the country is battling with irresponsible mining, “galamsey”.

By prioritizing the safety and well-being of its workers and the surrounding environment, Heath Goldfields is setting a positive example for the mining  industry.

Stakeholder Engagement

The successful revival of the Bogoso-Prestea mine is not solely the responsibility of Heath Goldfields; it requires the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, including the government, local communities, and other industry players.

Mensah acknowledged the importance of this collaborative approach, stating, “We are busy reopening the mine.”

This inclusive mindset underscores the company’s commitment to working alongside all relevant parties to ensure the long-term sustainability and prosperity of the mining operations.

As Heath Goldfields continues to make progress in reviving the Bogoso-Prestea mine, the people of Ghana can look forward to the economic and social benefits that will arise from this revitalization.

The company’s unwavering dedication to safety, environmental stewardship, and community engagement sets the stage for a promising future in the nation’s mining sector.
