Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has been crowned the Best Goalkeeper for the months of May and June by the Ex-National Goalkeepers Union (NEGO), in recognition of his outstanding performance during the closing stages of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season.

The accolade marks the final monthly award handed out by the union for the season, and Asare’s performances left little doubt as to the deserving recipient.

The 32-year-old shot-stopper played a pivotal role in Hearts of Oak’s late-season resurgence, helping the Phobians finish the campaign strongly and secure a top-four berth.

Over the last five league matches of the season, Asare guided his goal area with composure and authority, guiding the team to an impressive 13 points out of a possible 15.

He recorded three clean sheets during this crucial period and conceded only a single goal, underlining his influence and reliability.

His most notable contributions came in back-to-back clean sheet performances against Legon Cities and eventual league champions FC Samartex 1996.

In both games, Asare showcased his agility, decision-making, and shot-stopping prowess, frustrating opponents and earning plaudits from fans and pundits alike.

Against Samartex in particular, he was instrumental in neutralizing one of the league’s most potent attacking sides, preserving a vital draw that kept Hearts in the race for a top-four finish.

The Ex-National Goalkeepers Union, a body composed of former goalkeepers with rich experience in Ghanaian football, commended Asare for his consistency, leadership, and resilience during a high-pressure end to the season.

According to the union, the decision to name him the May/June Best Goalkeeper was based not only on his statistical output but also on his overall impact and command of the penalty area throughout the period.

As part of the award package, Asare received a branded towel, a pair of goalkeeper gloves, a water bottle, and a T-shirt from NEGO.

Benjamin Asare’s recognition is also reflective of a larger personal comeback story. After battling for playing time earlier in the season and facing stiff competition for the number one spot at Hearts of Oak, his patience and work ethic have paid dividends.

Contract Extension

In response to his performances and leadership on and off the pitch, Hearts of Oak have acted swiftly to tie him down to a contract extension.

The club confirmed that Asare has committed his future to the Phobians, a move that signals their intention to build a more defensively solid squad ahead of the 2025/26 season.

With competitions coming up next season, including the President’s Cup, the FA Cup and the Premier League, his experience and form will be critical to the club’s ambitions.

Club insiders have praised Asare’s calm demeanor and influence in the dressing room, with one official noting that, “Benjamin brings more than just saves; he brings assurance, focus, and an ability to organize the backline effectively. His impact goes beyond the pitch, and we’re happy to see his efforts recognized.”

Supporters have also taken to social media to congratulate the goalkeeper, many pointing to his performances as a major factor in the team’s improved results.
