Kennedy Agyapong’s re-entry into the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearership race has reignited internal political energy, but his supporters insist the real threat lies beyond party lines.

According to the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tema Central, Hon. Charles Forson, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) views Agyapong as its greatest fear ahead of the 2028 general election.

Speaking in defence of Agyapong’s presidential bid, Forson described the former Assin Central MP as the most relatable and unifying figure within the NPP, and the candidate most feared by the opposition.

His remarks come after Kennedy Agyapong officially picked up nomination forms for the NPP’s 2026 primaries, scheduled for January.

He cited the former MP’s 2023 performance – where he garnered nearly 38% of the votes in the party’s presidential primaries without formal backing from Members of Parliament or party executives – as proof of his independent strength.

He disclosed that, unlike the 2023 campaign, a number of MPs had come together to pick up the nomination forms on Agyapong’s behalf this time. Forson interpreted the gesture as a reflection of growing internal support and a shift in momentum within the party.

Hon. Forson argued that Agyapong’s rising popularity is anchored in his authenticity and direct connection with the people. Forson defended Agyapong’s economic credentials, describing him as a man of action who speaks the language of ordinary Ghanaians and understands practical economics.

He dismissed the credentials of political technocrats and praised Agyapong’s experience in navigating real economic terrain.

“Go to the marketplace, sit in the trotro, go to the banking hall, talk to the market person. They will tell you that this is a man who knows real economics, not book economics. Everybody is saying bring Kennedy Agyapong and the NPP will win in 2028, so why wait?”

Forson maintained that Agyapong’s perceived realness, coupled with his patriotic stance and confrontational style, positioned him as the only candidate capable of leading the NPP to victory and countering the NDC’s influence in the coming elections.

Beyond the Party Base

Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign team, now officially activated with the picking of nomination forms, has outlined discipline, patriotism, and economic transformation as the core pillars of the former MP’s platform.

According to campaign spokesperson Kwasi Kwarteng, these same themes underpinned Agyapong’s strong second-place finish in the 2024 primaries and remain central to his renewed quest for the presidency.

Hon. Forson added that the strategy for 2026 will continue to rely heavily on Agyapong’s direct engagement with ordinary citizens rather than elite party structures.

“Now, with no mechanism in place to whip people in line, I must say, he is going to win. The NDC’s greatest fear is Kennedy Agyapong, and Ghana’s saviour is Kennedy Agyapong. We need that saviour now”

While Kennedy Agyapong has yet to comment personally on his nomination, his team has framed his entry into the race as the beginning of a new phase in the NPP’s internal contest and the broader national political narrative.

Supporters like Hon. Forson believe that the former lawmaker’s anti-establishment stance, independent financial strength, and connection with everyday Ghanaians place him in a unique position within Ghanaian politics.

With the NPP flagbearer contest approaching and the 2028 general elections in sight, Agyapong’s campaign is expected to attract increased attention both within the ruling party and from opposition observers watching the race take shape.
