The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Youth Organiser for Kintampo South, Samuel Owusu, has hailed the legacy of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, crediting him with redefining the role of the Vice Presidency in Ghana’s political history.
His comments follow the collective purchase of nomination forms by 490 youth organisers from constituencies nationwide, signalling strong grassroots support for Dr. Bawumia ahead of the party’s January 2026 presidential primary.
Mr. Owusu stated that while the 1992 Constitution assigns limited formal duties to the Vice President, Dr. Bawumia’s tenure demonstrated how the office could be transformed into a centre of innovation and service delivery.
He described Dr. Bawumia as the most effective Vice President Ghana has ever had, highlighting how his policies left a lasting mark on governance.

“He has been the most effective Vice President this country has recorded. He came in and defined some roles to the credit of the Vice President. The Ghana Card, the digital address system, Zip-Line, Mobile money interoperability, these are things that have made life easy for us”

He noted that beyond introducing technological systems like the Ghana Card, the digital address system, and mobile money interoperability, Dr. Bawumia’s leadership style reflected a strong problem-solving orientation.
According to him, these initiatives improved efficiency in public service delivery, expanded financial inclusion, and positioned Ghana as a leader in tech-driven governance in the sub-region.
Mr. Owusu stressed that this record of delivery made Dr. Bawumia a popular choice among party members and a compelling figure to lead the NPP in the 2028 general elections. He said the Vice Presidency, under Dr. Bawumia, became a more visible and impactful institution that demonstrated its relevance to everyday life.

Criticism of NDC’s Governance Record
While praising Dr. Bawumia, Mr. Owusu’s comments come against a backdrop of criticism from other NPP figures about the current administration under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and President John Dramani Mahama.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia North, Hon. Akwasi Konadu, has openly dismissed the notion that the NDC’s gains in the 2024 elections signal a long-term shift in political support.
Mr Konadu attributed the NDC’s electoral performance to voter apathy among NPP supporters in the last elections, pointing out that about 1.7 million voters who backed the party in 2020 did not turn out in 2024.
“The votes the NDC had and the number of seats they had, even surprised everybody. The votes they had in the 2024 elections will not be reflected in 2028″
Hon. Akwasi Konadu, MP for Manhyia North
He argued that this presents an opportunity for the NPP to win back disillusioned supporters ahead of the next polls if the party rebuilds its base and strengthens its outreach.

Hon. Konadu, who also serves as Deputy Ranking Member on the Lands and Natural Resources Committee in Parliament, criticised the NDC government’s handling of illegal mining, or galamsey. He said the situation had worsened since the NDC assumed office in January 2025, accusing the government of lacking the political will it had promised while in opposition.
“It is getting disastrous. There is no hope. There is nothing that is being done that tells me that we would actually want to win the fight against illegal mining. The posturing of that government in opposition and their posture currently in administration tells me that there is no hope”
Hon. Akwasi Konadu, MP for Manhyia North
Hon. Konadu reminded the public that senior NDC members, while in opposition, had declared that any government unable to end galamsey in seven days was unfit to govern, yet after seven months in office, the crisis had only deepened.
For party loyalists like Mr. Owusu, these governance failures reinforce the belief that the NPP has a strong case to make in the 2028 elections, with Dr. Bawumia’s record serving as a rallying point for the grassroots.
