Bimbo Akintola Calls Out Nollywood Trends

Bimbo Akintola

Veteran actress Bimbo Akintola has opened up about the evolution of Nollywood, contrasting the raw hunger and passion that once defined the industry with the glamour-driven focus of today.

Speaking in a recent chat, Akintola recalled the early years of her career, when actors gave their all for the love of storytelling rather than financial gain or fame.

“Back then, we didn’t care about food, sleep, or even money. What pushed us was the hunger for the craft. We would work all night if we had to, just to get the story right,” she said, noting that her contemporaries, including screen icons like Joke Silva and Shola Sobowale, embodied the same tireless dedication.

The actress explained that the Nollywood of today tells a different story. According to her, many new-generation actors are more preoccupied with physical appearance than the art itself.

“I think when we do stage, we still get those passion-driven people who want to do their best in front of the audience. Now, people are saying, ‘My makeup isn’t right for this, and I can’t wear this. Is that what the film is about? We are more concerned about our outfits and how we look. This is why, generally, there is a spark in BBL. It is now about looks and not content or what one has. Looks will fade no matter what you do.”

While acknowledging Nollywood’s growth and global reach, Akintola stressed that the soul of the industry should never be lost to vanity.

For her, true acting still lies in passion, grit, and the commitment to bringing characters to life, no matter the sacrifice.

Bimbo Akintola had questioned her colleagues’ source of income over their lavish lifestyle, as she isn’t rich.

Bimbo noted how some of them sleep with or date politicians to fund their lifestyles, while others come from rich families.

Similarly, Kanayo O Kanayo had blown hot over the state of things in the industry. The veteran stated that Nollywood shouldn’t be a ground for Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), sex workers, Instagram stars, and homosexuality.

The veteran further called out social media influencers, who are now taking over Nollywood, for being the biggest cause of disrespect in the industry.

The veteran Nollywood actress finally opened up on why she remained single and without children at the age of 52.

In an exclusive interview, the Edo and Oyo State-born actress candidly explained that her marital status is not due to a lack of desire but rather life’s unexpected twists.

Akintola described marriage as a sacred institution that should happen in the presence of God and be witnessed by loved ones.

She recalled meeting a man she believed was her life partner, but tragedy struck when he passed away. Since then, she has yet to meet someone who meets her standards, especially in honesty and a shared commitment to a lifelong union.

“I value truthfulness above all else,” she revealed, adding that she would not marry unless she was certain it would last forever.

Despite her current status, the celebrated actress remained open to marriage at any stage of her life. “Even if I find the right person at 78, I would still get married,” she said.

While acknowledging that marriage doesn’t define a woman, Bimbo Akintola noted that it can hold greater significance with age.

“Marriage is important. It’s not the be-all and end-all, but as you grow older, especially when children leave home, loneliness can set in. Companionship becomes essential in later years.”
