The African Union Commission (AUC) has reaffirmed its strong ties with Ethiopian Airlines following a high-level meeting in Addis Ababa. The Chairperson of the Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, welcomed the airline’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Mesfin Tasew, in a session that highlighted the national carrier’s significance as a strategic partner in Africa’s growth and integration agenda.
During the meeting, the AUC Chairperson expressed appreciation for the airline, describing it as a “Pan-African flagship carrier”. He stressed the central role Ethiopian Airlines plays in advancing Agenda 2063, the AU’s long-term vision for the continent’s prosperity.
The Chairperson underscored that beyond being an airline, Ethiopian Airlines has become a key driver of regional integration by promoting connectivity, mobility, and trade. These efforts, he noted, are integral to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM), both of which are central pillars of Africa’s economic transformation.
In response, Mr. Tasew expressed gratitude to the African Union for its longstanding partnership with the airline. He emphasized that Ethiopian Airlines’ mission goes beyond providing transport services, describing it as a Pan-African institution deeply committed to the AU’s broader agenda. “We are proud to contribute to connecting Africa with the world, training African youth in aviation, supporting national carriers, and backing AU initiatives such as the Peace Fund,” he remarked.
The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to strengthening collaboration. The AU and Ethiopian Airlines agreed to deepen their joint efforts in order to boost Africa’s connectivity and integration while advancing shared aspirations under Agenda 2063.
AU And Airline Reaffirm Strategic Partnership
The discussions come at a time when Ethiopian Airlines is experiencing remarkable growth and financial stability despite ongoing global challenges. In the 2024/2025 fiscal year, the carrier reported revenue of $7.6 billion, representing an 8 percent increase compared to the previous year. Passenger traffic also surged, reaching 19 million travelers—15.2 million on international routes and 3.9 million on domestic flights. This performance solidifies the airline’s status as Africa’s largest carrier by revenue, passenger volume, and global reach.
The airline’s fleet now consists of more than 150 modern aircraft with an average age of under seven years. Among the fleet are cutting-edge models such as the Airbus A350 and Boeing 737, 767, 777, and 787. In the past fiscal year alone, Ethiopian Airlines expanded by adding 13 new aircraft and launching six new international routes. Its global network now spans over 140 destinations across five continents, underscoring its ambition to be a leader in global aviation.

To sustain its rapid growth, Ethiopian Airlines is investing heavily in infrastructure. Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, the airline’s current hub, is approaching its maximum capacity of 25 million passengers per year. To address this, the construction of a new mega-airport near Bishoftu is underway. When completed in 2029, the facility will be the largest in Africa, capable of handling 100 million passengers annually.
The airline also maintains a competitive advantage through its young fleet, broad route coverage, and membership in the Star Alliance. It has built partnerships with several African carriers, including those in Malawi, Zambia, and Togo, in line with its strategy to develop multiple hubs across the continent. At the same time, Ethiopian Airlines continues to push innovation. A partnership with Archer Aviation aims to establish Africa’s first electric air taxi network, signaling its readiness to lead the future of air mobility.
Looking ahead, Ethiopian Airlines has set an ambitious goal to rank among the world’s top 20 aviation groups by 2035. Its plans include doubling its fleet, expanding cargo and passenger capacity, and continuing to play a central role in Africa’s integration and global presence. The AU’s endorsement of the airline’s vision further strengthens its position as a cornerstone of continental development.
