The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has taken a significant step toward strengthening regional energy cooperation by hosting a high-level delegation from Algeria’s national oil and gas company, SONATRACH, for a two-day working visit aimed at exploring strategic partnerships in research, technology innovation, and laboratory development.
The discussions, held in Accra, focused on how the two national oil giants could collaborate to advance energy research, technology exchange, and capacity development across the African continent.
A major highlight of the engagement was the potential for cooperation through the GNPC Research and Technology Centre (RAT), a landmark initiative designed to position Ghana as a leader in oil and gas research and innovation.
Speaking during the bilateral discussions, Michael Aryeetey, GNPC’s Deputy Chief Executive in charge of Exploration and Production, underscored the importance of building homegrown capacity and fostering collaboration among African state-owned energy enterprises.
“This engagement with SONATRACH highlights GNPC’s persistent focus on driving innovation and cultivating African-led technological capacity.
“Collaborations of this nature are crucial to positioning our Research and Technology Centre as a centre of excellence for research and laboratory services within the West African sub-region.”

He added that the partnership would not only enhance GNPC’s institutional capacity but also open opportunities for Ghanaian engineers, researchers, and technicians to benefit from knowledge transfer and best practices shared by one of Africa’s most experienced energy corporations.
According to GNPC officials, the RAT Centre now in its final stages of development will feature a state-of-the-art laboratory equipped to deliver advanced analytical and testing services to support not only the petroleum sector but also the mining and environmental industries across Africa.
Mutual interest in innovation and capacity building

The SONATRACH delegation, led by senior officials Mrs. Souad Zegadi, Belkahla Merzoug, and Adelkader Zigadi, expressed admiration for Ghana’s growing commitment to research and technological advancement in the energy sector.
The team also included a representative from the Algerian High Commission, signaling the strategic importance both countries attach to this emerging partnership.
During presentations by both sides, GNPC and SONATRACH outlined their respective research priorities and technological competencies.
The discussions revealed strong alignment in their shared objectives advancing sustainable resource management, promoting data-driven innovation, and strengthening local content development in the energy value chain.
Mrs. Zegadi, speaking on behalf of the SONATRACH delegation, commended GNPC for its vision and investment in establishing a dedicated research and technology facility, noting that such infrastructure is critical to Africa’s energy independence.
“We are highly impressed by the scale and ambition of GNPC’s Research and Technology Centre.
“It demonstrates a long-term commitment to scientific excellence and local capacity development.”
