Interior Minister launches new insurance scheme for fire officers

SIC Life Insurance Limited has taken a decisive step to strengthen the social protection framework for Ghana’s frontline heroes following the signing of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding with the Ghana National Fire Service.

The agreement marks a major advancement in safeguarding the health, wellbeing and future of Fire Officers who risk their lives daily to protect lives and property across the country. The collaboration, signed at the Ministry of the Interior, signals a new era of support for security personnel and affirms the government’s dedication to improving the welfare of those who serve the nation.

The initiative includes a comprehensive insurance package designed to secure the lives of Fire Officers, offering both life cover and protection against critical illnesses. It also establishes a Welfare Fund dedicated to supporting retired officers. This fund will be financed by the annual premium contributions made by the Ghana National Fire Service, ensuring that retired personnel and their families receive long term support even after active service.

A Milestone in National Security Welfare

The signing ceremony brought together government officials, leadership of the Fire Service and senior executives of SIC Life Insurance. It was described by stakeholders as a significant milestone in the decades long relationship between the Ghana National Fire Service and SIC Life. The agreement reflects the increasing recognition of the risks that Fire Officers face every day and the urgent need to provide them with strong financial and health safety nets.

Mr Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, Minister for the Interior, expressed profound appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for his commitment and vision which made the initiative possible. He commended the President for demonstrating leadership in strengthening the welfare of security services, noting that such interventions help motivate personnel to continue serving with honour and courage.

The Minister also acknowledged the remarkable leadership of Madam Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong, the first female Chief Fire Officer in Ghana’s history. He praised her dedication and the effective management of the Service under her command. Mr Mubarak stated that the dangerous nature of firefighting demands deliberate policies that support officers in their line of duty, especially when they suffer injuries or illnesses as a result of their service.

Leadership Praises and Institutional Support

Madam Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong, in her remarks, described the partnership with SIC Life Insurance as a timely and strategic intervention that will bring relief to her staff. She expressed appreciation to SIC Life for responding positively to the needs of the Fire Service and pledged to work closely with the insurer to ensure the successful implementation of the scheme.

The Chief Fire Officer explained that the new insurance arrangement would cover every staff member of the Ghana National Fire Service. Before the rollout, her administration plans to engage personnel across the country to explain the details of the scheme and its benefits. She emphasised that education and sensitisation will be critical in ensuring that officers understand how to access the full range of support available to them.

According to her, the introduction of the Welfare Fund is particularly significant because it addresses a long standing gap in support for retired Fire Officers. Madam Sarpong stated that many officers leave service with health conditions that require long term treatment and financial stability. The Fund is therefore expected to provide comfort and security for retired officers and their families.

SIC Life’s Vision for Comprehensive Protection

Mr Solomon Twum Barimah, Managing Director of SIC Life Insurance, reaffirmed his organisation’s commitment to delivering reliable and comprehensive insurance solutions to Fire Officers. He expressed gratitude to the Minister for the initiative and assured the Fire Service that SIC Life would continue to refine and expand the package to match the evolving needs of personnel.

He highlighted the inclusion of critical illness cover as one of the most important components of the package. Firefighting is associated with high exposure to hazardous environments and health risks, making medical protection essential. Mr Barimah noted that the critical illness feature will provide financial support to officers diagnosed with life threatening medical conditions, enabling them to seek timely and adequate treatment.

The partnership between SIC Life Insurance and the Ghana National Fire Service represents a forward looking approach to national security welfare. It ensures that the individuals who run toward danger to save others are themselves protected from the uncertainties of life and health. The collaboration strengthens the bond between the two institutions and sets a model for other security agencies to follow.

With the introduction of life cover, critical illness protection and a dedicated Welfare Fund for retirees, the well being of officers is set to improve significantly, creating a more motivated Fire Service ready to serve the nation with renewed confidence.
