The Social Security and National Insurance Trust has announced a bold new step aimed at improving the lives of pensioners across the country.
In a move that signals a shift beyond the traditional pension model, SSNIT is preparing to roll out a nationwide Loyalty Programme designed to offer pensioners discounts and added privileges at selected hotels, retail outlets, and partner facilities.
The announcement was made by the Director-General of SSNIT, Mr Kwesi Afreh Biney, during an engagement with pensioners in Tamale, the Northern Regional capital. The initiative, he explained, reflects the Trust’s renewed commitment to enhancing the overall welfare of retirees who have contributed to the Scheme over the years.
A New Chapter for Pensioner Welfare
For decades, SSNIT has focused primarily on the timely payment of monthly pensions. While this core mandate remains intact, the Trust acknowledges that pensioners today face rising living costs and increasing healthcare needs. The Loyalty Programme seeks to bridge that gap by offering practical, everyday benefits that can ease financial pressure.
“By simply being an SSNIT pensioner, you receive preferential rates. It is our way of saying thank you as we seek to improve the value proposition of the Scheme”, Mr Afreh Biney said.
His remarks were met with applause from pensioners gathered at the event, many of whom expressed appreciation for the gesture. The Director-General emphasized that although the loyalty programme falls outside SSNIT’s core mandate, it is intended to add value to Pensioners’ lives.
Discussions between SSNIT and relevant stakeholders are already at an advanced stage to ensure the seamless operationalisation of the initiative nationwide. According to officials, the goal is to make the programme accessible and straightforward so that pensioners can easily benefit without bureaucratic hurdles.

Beyond the Pension Cheque
Over the years, SSNIT pensioners have consistently received their monthly pensions on time. This reliability has been a hallmark of the Scheme and a source of reassurance for retirees. In addition, pensioners have benefited from healthcare support initiatives facilitated through the Pensioners Medical Scheme under the National Pensioners Association.
However, SSNIT believes more can be done. The Loyalty Programme marks a significant evolution in how the Trust views its relationship with pensioners. Instead of limiting support to financial transfers, the Trust is exploring ways to enhance quality of life through partnerships and innovative services.
The proposed discounts at hotels and retail shops are expected to help pensioners stretch their income further. For retirees who rely primarily on their pensions, even modest savings on accommodation, groceries, and other essentials can make a meaningful difference.
Telemedicine on the Horizon
Beyond the loyalty programme, SSNIT is also working on introducing telemedicine services for pensioners. The telemedicine initiative is expected to enable pensioners to consult medical professionals remotely via phone and digital platforms, providing access to medical services.
For many elderly citizens, especially those living in remote areas, accessing healthcare can be challenging. Long travel distances, mobility issues, and the cost of transportation often discourage regular medical checkups. Telemedicine could significantly reduce these barriers by bringing healthcare services directly to pensioners in the comfort of their homes.
This digital health component aligns with broader efforts to modernize public service delivery and leverage technology to improve access. If successfully implemented, it could transform how pensioners receive medical advice and follow-up care.
Pensioners React
Pensioners at the Tamale engagement expressed optimism about the new initiatives. Speaking through the Northern Regional leadership of the National Pensioners Association, they described the programmes as timely and thoughtful.
They noted that the initiatives would go a long way toward easing financial pressure, improving access to healthcare, and enhancing their overall quality of life. For many retirees, the sense of being valued and remembered by the Scheme they contributed to for years carries emotional significance.
Some pensioners shared that the combination of financial benefits and healthcare support gives them renewed confidence in their post-retirement life. Others highlighted the importance of consistent communication between SSNIT and its beneficiaries, urging the Trust to maintain open channels as the programmes roll out.

Strengthening the Value Proposition
Mr Afreh Biney reiterated that the Loyalty Programme represents a broader strategy to strengthen the value proposition of the Scheme. While pensions remain the foundation, SSNIT is positioning itself as a more holistic partner in retirement.
The Trust’s approach suggests a recognition that retirement today requires more than a monthly cheque. It demands support systems that address health, social engagement, and economic realities. By collaborating with hotels, retailers, and healthcare providers, SSNIT is attempting to build an ecosystem of benefits tailored to pensioners’ needs.
As implementation plans move forward, stakeholders will be watching closely to see how effectively the initiatives are executed nationwide. If successful, the programme could set a new standard for pension administration in the country.
