The Ghana Armed Forces has successfully concluded a coordinated search and rescue operation that led to the safe evacuation of dozens of stranded Ghanaian fishermen off the coast of the Central Region.
The operation, which began at dawn on February 26, 2026, followed distress reports involving fishing vessels attacked by sea robbers approximately 35 nautical miles from the Gomoa Nyanyano and Senya Bereku stretch of Ghana’s coastline.
“The fishermen got stranded after they were attacked by robbers who disposed the entire fishermen of their outboard motors and personal belongings. Affected boats include Argentina 2, Argentina 3, Sea Lion, and Berema Nsukwa, among others.”
Veronica Adzo Arhin, Captain (Ghana Navy), Acting Director General Public Relations
The situation raised immediate concern within coastal communities, particularly amid fears of possible kidnappings, a growing security threat in parts of the Gulf of Guinea. However, interviews conducted with rescued victims confirmed that no Ghanaian fisherman was abducted during the incident.
Joint Military and Community Effort
The rescue operation was led by the Ghana Navy with critical air support from the Ghana Air Force. The mission also benefited from timely assistance provided by local fishermen from the Nyanyano and Senya Bereku areas, whose familiarity with the waters proved valuable during the operation.

Specialised units of the Ghana Navy, including the Special Boat Squadron equipped with fast interceptor crafts, were deployed alongside naval vessels from both the Eastern and Western Naval Commands. The coordinated sea and air response enabled rescuers to locate the distressed boats and evacuate victims under challenging maritime conditions.
In total, 71 fishermen were rescued during the operation. Twenty four were safely transported to Tema, while forty seven others were conveyed to Senya Bereku, where they received immediate assistance from local authorities and community members.
The Ghana Armed Forces noted that the speed and effectiveness of the response reflected improved coordination among the services and strong collaboration with civilian maritime users along the coast.
Security Situation and Continued Patrols
While the rescue mission has formally ended, the Ghana Navy has maintained an enhanced security presence in the affected maritime zone. Patrols are continuing across Ghana’s Exclusive Economic Zone, including the area where the fishermen were attacked, as security agencies assess the evolving situation.
The Ghana Armed Forces have urged fishermen and other maritime operators to exercise extreme caution while at sea and to promptly report any suspicious movements or incidents to the nearest naval or security authority. Officials stressed that early reporting remains essential to ensuring rapid response and preventing escalation of maritime crime.
The incident has renewed attention on the persistent challenge of piracy and armed robbery at sea, which poses risks not only to livelihoods but also to national maritime security and food supply chains dependent on artisanal fishing.

Acknowledgement of Local Support
The Ghana Armed Forces expressed appreciation to stakeholders whose swift intervention supported the success of the rescue mission. Special acknowledgment was given to the Member of Parliament for the area, Gizella Tetteh Agbotui, as well as to fisher folk and residents of Senya Bereku, whose cooperation and logistical support aided both search and evacuation efforts.
Military officials noted that the collective response demonstrated the importance of civil military cooperation in managing emergencies along Ghana’s coastline, particularly in communities where fishing remains the backbone of economic activity.
Reaffirming its mandate, the Ghana Navy stated that it remains fully committed to protecting Ghanaian fishermen, combating piracy and armed robbery at sea, and ensuring the safety of vessels operating within Ghana’s maritime domain. The Armed Forces emphasized that safeguarding coastal livelihoods is central to broader national security objectives.
The rescue operation, officials say, underscores the readiness of the Ghana Armed Forces to respond swiftly to maritime emergencies and highlights the importance of sustained investment in naval and air capabilities to address evolving threats at sea.

As investigations continue into the robbery incident, authorities are expected to review maritime security measures and strengthen engagement with fishing communities to improve early warning and response systems.
For the rescued fishermen and their families, the successful operation brings relief after hours of uncertainty and reinforces confidence in the state’s ability to protect citizens beyond the shoreline.
