The First Lady of the Republic of Ghana, and President of the Lordina Foundation, HE Lordina Dramani Mahama, has commissioned a newly renovated and fully equipped Anyima Health Centre in the Kintampo South District of the Bono East Region to improve access to quality healthcare for residents in the area.

The facility, located in the community of Anyima, is expected to serve more than 3,000 residents and surrounding communities with expanded maternal, emergency and outpatient healthcare services.

The project was undertaken by the Lordina Foundation following advocacy from the Anyima Queenmother, Nana Saa Gyamfuaa II, who called for improved healthcare infrastructure in the community.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Mrs. Mahama expressed concern about Ghana’s maternal and infant mortality rates and the urgent need to improve access to healthcare services, particularly in rural communities.

She noted that maternal mortality in Ghana remains close to 300 deaths per 100,000 live births, while infant mortality stands at about 32 deaths per 1,000 live births.

“Behind these numbers are mothers, daughters, sisters and precious children whose lives could be saved with timely access to quality healthcare facilities and skilled birth attendants”.

She emphasized that improving healthcare infrastructure and ensuring the availability of skilled medical personnel remain essential in reducing preventable deaths among mothers and newborns.

President to Launch Primary Health Care Programme

Mrs. Mahama also announced that President John Dramani Mahama will soon launch a nationwide Primary Health Care Programme aimed at providing free healthcare services at selected facilities across the country.

According to her, facilities such as the Anyima Health Centre will play an important role in the programme by offering accessible services to rural populations.

The initiative is expected to strengthen primary healthcare delivery and improve early access to medical care for many communities. The renovated health centre has been equipped with several departments designed to improve healthcare delivery in the community.

These include an outpatient department, consulting room, examination room, delivery room, labour ward, children’s ward and male and female wards. Additional facilities include an adolescent health centre, laboratory, dispensary, emergency room and offices for nurses and midwives.

Lordina Mahama explained that the foundation also provided essential medical equipment to support quality healthcare delivery.

“The Anyima Health Centre has new beds and mattresses for the wards, examination beds, an electric obstetric bed, an infant incubator, an infant phototherapy unit, an ultrasound system, and a digital electrocardiogram machine”.

A Lifesaving Initiative for the Community

Mrs. Mahama described the facility as a critical intervention that will improve healthcare outcomes in the community. “My dear brothers and sisters, my children and Nanamum, the buildings the Lordina Foundation is constructing are not merely structures. They are lifesavers,” she said.

She noted that the facility will significantly reduce the need for residents to travel long distances in search of quality healthcare services.

“This means that sick relatives and pregnant women in Anyima and neighbouring communities will no longer endanger their lives by travelling long distances for quality healthcare”.

According to her, the facility will also ensure that newborn babies receive immediate professional medical attention when needed. The commissioning of the health centre is expected to significantly strengthen healthcare delivery in Anyima and surrounding communities within the Kintampo South District.

Local leaders and residents welcomed the initiative, noting that access to healthcare has long been a challenge for the area. With the upgraded infrastructure and modern equipment, health officials say the facility will improve maternal care, emergency response and general outpatient services for thousands of residents in the region.

The project forms part of broader efforts by the Lordina Foundation to support healthcare delivery and social development in underserved communities across Ghana.
