The age-old debate over who holds the crown as Ghana’s greatest rapper of all time has been reignited following a bold declaration by one of the industry’s most respected veterans.
During a recent interview, Ga-rap heavyweight Tinny crowned the legendary Lord Kenya as the undisputed “Greatest of All Time” (GOAT), citing his unparalleled impact on the hiplife genre and his unmatched stage presence.
Tinny, born Nii Addo Quaynor, did not mince words when asked about the hierarchy of Ghanaian lyricists.
While the modern era often focuses on the global commercial success and streaming numbers of contemporary stars, Tinny urged fans and critics to look back at the foundation laid in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
“Lord Kenya was the complete package,” Tinny stated during the live broadcast.
“If we are talking about style, the delivery, the energy on stage, and the depth of the lyrics, nobody comes close to what he did during his prime. He wasn’t just a rapper; he was a phenomenon that moved the entire nation with every single verse”

Lord Kenya, born Philip Akpor Kojo Addo, dominated the Ghanaian music scene with a string of hits including “Sika Ba,” “Akasiani,” “Driver Susu Ko,” and “Born Again.” His high-octane performances and distinct “Heavyweight” persona earned him numerous accolades, including the coveted Artiste of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards in 2001.

Career Switch
However, at the height of his fame in October 2010, he famously pivoted from secular music to become an evangelist, a move that shocked the nation and effectively ended one of the most successful music careers in West Africa.
Tinny argued that Lord Kenya’s departure from the scene has left a void that remains unfilled despite the technical prowess and speed of current rappers.
“You have to understand the era he operated in,” Tinny explained further.
“He made hiplife a national treasure. Every song was a masterpiece. To me, he remains the blueprint for what a Ghanaian rap star should be rebellious yet relatable, and always lyrically superior”

The declaration has sparked a massive wave of nostalgia and debate across social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok.
While many older fans who lived through the “Lord Kenya era” agreed with Tinny’s assessment, younger audiences quickly rose to the defense of modern-day titan Sarkodie.
The “Sark-Natives” pointed to Sarkodie’s international awards, such as his BET wins, and his decade-plus longevity as evidence of his superiority.
Addressing the inevitable comparisons, Tinny noted that while he respects the new generation, the “feeling” was different back then.
“I respect everyone’s hustle and what the new guys are doing. Sarkodie is a king in his own right, but when you look at the raw impact and the culture shift Lord Kenya brought when hiplife was just starting to breathe, you can’t deny him the top spot”

Industry experts have also weighed in on the discussion. Music historian and pundit, Kofi Amoako, remarked that Tinny’s comments highlight a growing desire to preserve the history of hiplife in an era dominated by Afrobeats.
“Lord Kenya’s influence is undeniable. He brought a certain ‘street’ credibility combined with commercial appeal that was revolutionary for that time. Tinny’s quote reminds us that the history of Ghana rap didn’t start ten years ago; it has deep, powerful roots that Lord Kenya watered,” Amoako noted.
As Evangelist Lord Kenya continues his ministry at the Lord Kenya Evangelistic Ministry, he has remained largely silent on the persistent debates regarding his musical legacy.

Nevertheless, Tinny’s endorsement ensures that the “Sika Ba” hitmaker’s name remains at the forefront of Ghanaian entertainment news.
For many, the debate is less about ranking and more about historical appreciation. As Tinny concluded in his interview, “We often give people their flowers when they are gone or when they can no longer hear us, but I want to give Lord Kenya his now. He is the GOAT, period.”
