Accra is set to witness a special evening of music, vulnerability, and cultural fusion as fast-rising singer-songwriter Baaba J brings her acclaimed “In Pursuit of Happiness” project era to a close.

The 22-year-old artist, known for her genre-blending sound that weaves highlife, soul, pop, rap, and Afro-indie elements with rich Ga-language storytelling, will perform live on Saturday, June 7, 2026, at NAFTI Studio III from 7PM to 9PM.

Promoted as an intimate two-hour concert produced by Afrodite Society, the event promises a close connection between artist and audience – “Me, you and the music. One night only,” as Baaba J herself posted on Instagram. Tickets are expected to move quickly for what many fans see as a milestone celebration of one of Ghana’s most promising young voices.

Born Jemima Baaba Haywood-Dadzie, Baaba J grew up in Tema, where her musical journey was shaped by a blend of influences. She attended St. Theresa’s School, Hariom International School, and Mfantsiman Girls’ Secondary School before studying Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Ghana, Legon. While her academic path pointed toward a different career, the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 became a turning point.

Collaborating with her cousin and producer Merk, she released her debut EP Lumumba St., marking the start of a career defined by authenticity and experimentation.

Baaba J’s sound stands out in Ghana’s vibrant music scene. She incorporates indigenous highlife rhythms and the Ga language to ground her music firmly in Ghanaian identity while embracing Western pop, soul, and rap structures.

In interviews, she has explained the deliberate choice to write in Ga after early feedback that her sound felt “too Western.” “I didn’t want to change my genre, but I also wanted people to feel that my music was truly Ghanaian,” she shared.

This fusion has earned her a dedicated following and critical attention.

Her inspirations draw from a rich tapestry: her mother’s gospel music, highlife legends, Samini’s energy, Asa’s introspection, and global icons like Beyoncé. This eclectic background shines through in her evolving discography.

After Lumumba St., she continued building with subsequent projects, performing at events such as TEDx Ashesi University and the Accra Indie Film Festival. She has also ventured into filmmaking, adding another creative dimension to her artistry.

Pursuit of Happiness

The “In Pursuit of Happiness” EP, released in late 2024, represents a deeper chapter. The six-track project (approximately 16 minutes long) blends alté, Afropop, Afro-R&B, and Afro-indie sounds. Standout tracks include “Sunshine,” which explores themes of acceptance and self-love, “Ah Well” (featuring Juls and Oladapo), “Human,” “Here Comes The Sun” (with B4bonah), and “Runaway.”

Critics and fans have praised the EP for its soulful vocals, masterful songwriting, and emotional vulnerability. In early 2025, Baaba J released a full live performance version with the band The Musical Lunatics, further demonstrating her strength as a live performer.

This Accra show caps a busy period that has seen the artist take her music beyond Ghana’s borders. She recently performed in Lagos to positive reviews and has built momentum across the continent.

For many young Ghanaians, Baaba J represents more than just good music. She embodies the confidence of a new generation unafraid to blend tradition with modernity, vulnerability with strength, and local roots with global ambition.

The choice of NAFTI Studio III -part of the University of Media, Arts and Communication (formerly NAFTI)  is fitting for an artist who also engages with film and visual storytelling. The venue’s creative atmosphere should complement the intimate, artistic vibe promised for the evening.

Her work often touches on personal growth, self-discovery, relationships, and the everyday joys and struggles of young life -themes that resonate strongly with her audience.

As the June 7 date approaches, anticipation is building on social media. Fans have expressed excitement about experiencing her catalog live, particularly the In Pursuit of Happiness material in an intimate setting.

The event is expected to feature live instrumentation, heartfelt delivery, and perhaps a few surprises as she bids farewell to this creative chapter before moving to new territory.

In Ghana’s ever-evolving music landscape dominated by Afrobeats, highlife revival, and alternative voices – Baaba J carves a distinct lane. Her commitment to authenticity, linguistic pride, and emotional depth positions her as one of the country’s most exciting emerging talents.
