Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon is close to sealing a permanent move to La Liga giants FC Barcelona from the Magpies in what is expected to be one of the biggest transfers of the summer window.
Barcelona and Newcastle United agreed on a £70 million deal, including add-ons, earlier this week, with the player subsequently travelling to Spain to complete his medical ahead of the move.
Reports in Spain suggest that Gordon has successfully passed his medical examinations and has already signed his contract with the Catalan club, with only the official announcement from both clubs remaining before the transfer is confirmed.
The transfer marks another major statement of intent from Barcelona under manager Hansi Flick, who is keen on strengthening his attacking options ahead of the new campaign as the club looks to defend its domestic crown and challenge strongly in Europe once again.
Gordon Set For a Big Leap
Anthony Gordon has been one of the standout performers behind Newcastle United’s resurgence in recent years, playing a key role in helping the club qualify for the UEFA Champions League twice in the last three seasons.

The English winger also played an instrumental role in ending Newcastle’s long wait for silverware after helping the Magpies win the EFL Carabao Cup during the 2024-25 season, a triumph that cemented the club’s return among England’s elite.
Gordon joined the Tyneside club from Everton in 2023 and quickly established himself as one of the Premier League’s most energetic and dangerous attacking players.
Since arriving at St James’ Park, the 25-year-old has scored 39 goals in 152 appearances across all competitions. He also enjoyed an impressive UEFA Champions League campaign this season, scoring 10 goals as Newcastle made another strong showing in Europe.
His pace, direct running and relentless pressing style made him one of Eddie Howe’s most reliable attacking outlets.
Those qualities are believed to have convinced Barcelona to pursue the England international aggressively, with Gordon viewed as an ideal fit for Hansi Flick’s high-intensity football philosophy.
The former Everton winger is capable of operating on either flank or as the main striker and is equally effective in transition and possession-based systems, attributes that made him one of Barcelona’s priority targets this summer.
Barcelona Win Race to Sign Gordon
Several top European clubs were linked with a move for Gordon in recent months. German champions Bayern Munich were said to be monitoring his situation closely, while Premier League side Liverpool were also credited with strong interest.
However, Barcelona appear to have moved quickest to secure the player’s signature, acting swiftly to finalise an agreement with Newcastle before rival clubs could intensify their pursuit.

For Newcastle United, Gordon’s departure would represent a significant loss considering his influence on the squad over the last few seasons.
Nevertheless, the sizeable transfer fee is expected to provide Eddie Howe with financial flexibility as the club continues rebuilding its squad for the upcoming season.
The transfer also highlights Barcelona’s determination to continue rebuilding under Flick after a successful campaign that saw the Catalans retain the La Liga title.
Adding a player with Gordon’s work rate, versatility and attacking output is seen as a major boost to the club’s ambitions going into next season.
World Cup Gets the Immediate Attention
Gordon is now expected to officially begin his Barcelona career after the FIFA World Cup, where he has been included in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad.

The winger will hope to play a key role as England seek to end their 60-year wait for a major international trophy, with the Three Lions entering the tournament among the favourites.
Should the deal be officially confirmed in the coming days, Gordon would become one of the marquee arrivals of Barcelona’s summer rebuild and another high-profile English player set to test himself in Spanish football.
