Jose Mourinho returns to the Bernabeu for a second stint

Fifteen-time European champions Real Madrid have confirmed the return of Portuguese manager José Mourinho as the club’s new head coach, marking the beginning of a second spell at the Santiago Bernabéu more than a decade after his first tenure ended.

The Spanish giants announced the appointment on Thursday following a meeting of the club’s board of directors chaired by president Florentino Pérez. Mourinho has signed a three-year contract that will keep him at Real Madrid until June 30, 2029.

His return comes at a crucial moment for Los Blancos, who are eager to reclaim domestic supremacy and challenge rivals Barcelona after a period of inconsistency in Spanish football. The veteran tactician is expected to officially assume his duties when the club begins preparations for the new campaign next month.

In a statement confirming the appointment, Real Madrid said “The Board of Directors of Real Madrid C.F., meeting today, Thursday, June 11, and presided over by Florentino Pérez, has agreed to appoint José Mourinho as the first team’s head coach for the next three seasons, until June 30, 2029.”

Return to Familiar Territory

Mourinho’s appointment represents a dramatic homecoming for one of football’s most decorated managers. The Portuguese coach previously led Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, a period that saw the club challenge Pep Guardiola’s dominant Barcelona side and secure the 2011-12 La Liga title with a then-record points tally.

During his first stint in Madrid, Mourinho worked closely with president Florentino Pérez as the pair sought to restore Real Madrid’s position at the summit of European football. Although the partnership ended after three seasons, both men maintained mutual respect, and their reunion signals a renewed effort to return the club to the top of the Spanish game.

The club also confirmed when Mourinho will begin his second chapter in Madrid in July. “José Mourinho will join Real Madrid on July 13, the day preseason begins.”

His arrival is expected to bring immediate changes both on and off the pitch, with supporters hopeful that his experience and winning mentality can guide the club through a new era of success.

A Journey Across Europe’s Elite Clubs

Since leaving Real Madrid in 2013, Mourinho has managed several of Europe’s biggest clubs. He returned to Chelsea for a second spell before taking charge of Manchester United, where he won the UEFA Europa League and EFL Cup.

The Portuguese coach later had spells with Tottenham Hotspur, AS Roma and Turkish side Fenerbahçe, adding further experience to an already illustrious managerial career. Most recently, he was in charge of Benfica, where he rebuilt his reputation and attracted interest from several leading clubs across Europe. He led them to an unbeaten season in the Portuguese League though they fell short of the title to rivals, FC Porto.

Real Madrid ultimately won the race for his signature, reportedly agreeing to pay Benfica €15 million in compensation to release him from his contract at the Estádio da Luz.

The move underlines the confidence Pérez and the club’s hierarchy have in Mourinho’s ability to deliver immediate results and restore a winning culture.

New Mission at the Bernabéu

Mourinho returns to Madrid with an impressive résumé that includes league titles in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain, as well as multiple European trophies. His tactical expertise, strong personality and ability to manage high-pressure environments are among the qualities that convinced Real Madrid to bring him back.

The challenge awaiting him is significant. Barcelona have established themselves as the dominant force in Spanish football in recent seasons, while competition across Europe continues to intensify.

However, Mourinho has built a career on thriving under pressure and delivering success in demanding circumstances. His appointment is expected to energise both the dressing room and the club’s global fanbase.

As preseason preparations approach, attention will now turn to the Portuguese manager’s plans for the squad and the transfer market. With Florentino Pérez once again placing his trust in Mourinho, Real Madrid hope their renewed partnership can usher in another successful chapter in the club’s storied history and return Los Blancos to the summit of Spanish and European football.
