GHS1m a Huge Boost But Not Enough, Says Young Apostles Communications Manager

Young Apostles Communications and Brand Manager Vincent Henneh has welcomed the Ghana Football Association’s decision to provide each Ghana Premier League club with GHS1 million ahead of the 2026/27 season, describing the package as a major financial boost despite falling short of what clubs require to operate for an entire campaign.

Speaking exclusively to the Vault News Network, Henneh said the funding would help Young Apostles meet part of their financial obligations, particularly as the club continues to build its commercial base.

He praised the idea to reduce the financial burden of clubs. “I think it’s a good initiative. I think that it started last year,” the Communications and Brand Manager said, before adding that Young Apostles had struggled to attract sponsors when he joined the club.

The GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku announced the GHS1 million package at the Association’s 32nd Ordinary Congress in Prampram on Thursday, August 20.

The same amount was committed to each participating club during the 2025/26 season, while the 2026/27 campaign will also feature increased prize money with the champions set to get GHS 3million.

However, Vincent Henneh stressed that the amount would cover only about one-third of the club’s projected budget for the season.

He revealed that Young Apostles are currently working to secure beverage, transportation and other sponsorship deals to strengthen its finances in addition to the proposed GHS1m they’ll receive from the GFA.

The communications manager used the cost of travelling for away matches to underline why he believes the allocation, although significant, remains insufficient. He explained that a long-distance trip can involve several days of accommodation, transport, feeding and other expenses, with one away fixture potentially costing close to GHS100,000.

“We are also hopeful that the league will get more sponsors, so that after this one million Ghana cedis from Adesa Productions, we might also get another money to help the team. Because if you are very familiar with the Ghana Premier League, an away game from Wenchi to Samreboi could even cost about 100,000 Ghana cedis if you are making the maths very well.”

Young Apostles Target Top Eight as Financial Rewards Increase

Despite the financial challenges, Young Apostles are setting their sights higher after successfully surviving relegation in their first two Premier League campaigns.

The Wenchi-based side finished 13th last season after only securing their top-flight status on the final day.

Henneh said the club’s immediate objective for the new season is to finish among the top eight, although he admitted that a top-four finish or even the league title would be welcomed if the team can outperform expectations.

“From my first conversation with the club and the technical team, their target this season is to be part of the top eight as of now. But then if we are able and we are fortunate enough to be in the top four and to even win the ultimate, that is our aim.”

He identified an improvement in Young Apostles’ home form as one of the key requirements for achieving that target.

The club performed relatively well away from home last season but dropped valuable points at their own ground, a weakness Henneh believes must be addressed.

Young Apostles will begin their 2026/27 campaign away from home against Vision FC, giving the club an immediate opportunity to put their improved ambitions to the test.

Wenchi Stadium Still Awaiting Approval

The club is also racing against time to secure approval for the Wenchi Sports Stadium, which was not among the 13 venues approved by the GFA for the upcoming Premier League season.

Henneh said the Club Licensing Board identified several areas requiring attention during its inspection, including improvements to the pitch and changes to the technical bench area.

According to Henneh, discussions involving the club, the Wenchi Municipal Assembly and other stakeholders have since resulted in work being undertaken at the facility.

He said improvements to the pitch and painting works are ongoing, while other issues raised by the licensing authorities are also being addressed.

“The Wenchi Sports Stadium is not approved yet. But there’s been work ongoing, especially on the pitch. We are hopeful that before the league starts, the final inspection board can also consider the Wenchi Sports Stadium so that we can start our game.”

Young Apostles are therefore hopeful that the stadium will receive final approval before the league begins in early September. The club’s opening fixture, however, is away to Vision FC, meaning the venue issue will not affect their first match.

Young Apostles Preseason And Transfer Activities

Henneh also provided an update on the club’s preparations ahead of the upcoming season, revealing that Young Apostles have enjoyed an extended pre-season camp in Sunyani lasting about two months.

The club has conducted scouting exercises and trials while also participating in the Sompa Invitational Cup at the Sunyani Coronation Park.

He said the club remains committed to its traditional recruitment strategy of identifying emerging talent rather than routinely buying players from direct Premier League competitors. “Anybody who knows Young Apostles’ tradition knows that we don’t normally buy players from our competitors, especially in the Ghana Premier League. But we are known for scouting players from the lower divisions,” Henneh said.

With the club continuing its recruitment and pre-season preparations, Henneh believes the combination of the GHS1 million GFA support, potential sponsorship deals and improved squad preparation can provide Young Apostles with a stronger foundation for their third consecutive Premier League campaign.
