Somali Referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan

Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has been handed one of the most prestigious assignments in European football after UEFA appointed him to officiate the 2026 UEFA Super Cup, just days after he was unable to take up his role at the FIFA World Cup in the United States.

Artan will oversee the season-opening European showpiece between UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and UEFA Europa League holders Aston Villa in Salzburg on August 12. The appointment marks a significant milestone for both the referee and African football, highlighting his growing reputation on the international stage.

The 2025 CAF Men’s Referee of the Year has enjoyed a remarkable rise in recent years, earning widespread recognition for his performances in major competitions. Despite being named among the match officials selected for the FIFA World Cup 2026, Artan was unable to participate after being denied entry into the United States.

His absence from football’s biggest tournament sparked disappointment across Africa, particularly in Somalia, where he had been celebrated as a trailblazer. However, UEFA’s latest decision has provided a new chapter in his story and placed him at the centre of another high-profile global event.

UEFA Rewards Excellence

UEFA confirmed that Artan’s appointment forms part of the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding between UEFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which aims to strengthen cooperation across several areas of the game, including refereeing development.

The governing body described the selection as a reflection of its commitment to promoting unity, equality and inclusion through football while recognising outstanding officiating talent regardless of geographical boundaries.

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin praised the Somali official’s achievements and experience despite his relatively young age. “Omar Artan is an excellent young but already experienced referee,” Čeferin said, noting that the official had consistently demonstrated his ability “at the highest competition level” within African football.

The UEFA president added that football should serve as a force that connects people and said the organisation wanted to acknowledge Artan’s “outstanding officiating skills,” which had already earned him a place among the referees selected for the World Cup.

Čeferin also thanked CAF President Patrice Motsepe for supporting the initiative, describing the appointment as an example of collaboration between the two confederations.

From Mogadishu Welcome to European Spotlight

Artan’s latest assignment comes after an emotional period in his career. Having been selected by FIFA for the 2026 World Cup, he travelled with hopes of becoming the first Somali referee to officiate at the tournament.

Those ambitions were interrupted when he was denied entry into the United States and was forced to return home before the competition began.

Despite the disappointment, the reception he received upon arriving in Mogadishu reflected the pride many Somalis felt in his achievements. Large crowds gathered at the airport to welcome him back, celebrating his historic accomplishment of reaching the World Cup officials’ list.

The scenes highlighted Artan’s status as one of Somalia’s most respected sporting figures and reinforced the belief that his journey on the international stage was far from over.

Continental Success Earns Global Recognition

Artan’s rise has been built on a series of notable performances across African football. Since joining FIFA’s international refereeing list in 2018, he has steadily established himself among the continent’s elite officials.

He was selected as part of the refereeing team for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and later took charge of the second leg of the 2025/26 CAF Champions League final between Morocco’s AS FAR Rabat and South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe described Artan as a source of pride not only for Somalia but for the entire African continent. “His receipt of the CAF Men’s Referee of the Year Award 2025 and his appointment as a referee of the FIFA World Cup 2026 are a recognition of his world-class refereeing ability,” Motsepe said.

The CAF leader welcomed UEFA’s decision and thanked Čeferin for creating the opportunity, calling it “a great honour” for Artan and African referees as a whole.

Motsepe added that the appointment demonstrated football’s unique ability to bring people together across continents, cultures and backgrounds.

For Artan, the UEFA Super Cup now represents more than another major assignment. It is an opportunity to showcase his abilities on one of football’s grandest stages and a powerful statement that excellence can continue to open doors, even after unexpected setbacks.
