Six arrested Over Kwabenya-Kristo Asafo Shooting Incident

The Ghana Police Service has arrested six private security guards in connection with a shooting incident involving former Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, at Kwabenya in the Greater Accra Region.

According to a press release issued by the Regional Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service on June 21, 2026, the arrests followed an incident that occurred at a residence in Kwabenya where a ceremony was being held.

The Police stated that personnel from the National Operations Directorate and the Intelligence Directorate, who were on a special assignment, received a distress call from the residence and immediately proceeded to the scene to assess the situation.

Preliminary investigations by the Police indicate that the event was being held at the residence of Mr. Tamakloe Safo Jehoshaphat, also known as Akofena. The Police reported that Hon. Adwoa Safo arrived at the premises and requested access but was allegedly denied entry.

Investigators further established that armed security personnel stationed at the residence allegedly discharged firearms during the incident. The Police said the incident resulted in injuries to Hon. Adwoa Safo, while her vehicle was found with multiple gunshot marks.

Weapons and Equipment Retrieved

Following the incident, the Police conducted a search operation which led to the retrieval of several weapons and communication devices.

According to the Police statement, officers recovered five pump action guns, one Taurus pistol loaded with seven rounds of 9mm ammunition, an additional magazine loaded with five rounds of 9mm ammunition, and communication equipment believed to be relevant to the investigation.

The six suspects together with the retrieved exhibits have since been transferred to the Police Headquarters to assist ongoing investigations.

The Police said efforts are continuing to identify and arrest all other persons who may have been connected to the incident. “The suspects and exhibits have been transferred to the Police Headquarters to assist ongoing investigations,” the statement said.

Kristo Asafo Mission Responds

Meanwhile, the Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana has issued a statement disputing some claims circulating on social media regarding the events that unfolded at the church’s property in Kwabenya.

In a statement released by the church leadership, the Mission said the incident occurred after a lawful church event had been held at the premises. According to the church, Sarah Adwoa Safo arrived at the venue and allegedly drove her vehicle into the entrance gates of the property.

The church stated that its information showed that the vehicle struck two metallic gates, causing significant damage to the structures. Church leaders said many worshippers and invited guests were present at the time and argued that the incident posed a serious risk to people gathered within the premises.

“Had the gates completely collapsed or had the vehicle proceeded beyond the entrance, the safety of attendees could have been gravely endangered,” the statement noted.

Church Rejects Shooting Claims

The Kristo Asafo Mission also addressed reports suggesting that Adwoa Safo had been shot during the incident. According to the church leadership, it had become aware of media reports and social media claims alleging that she had sustained a gunshot injury.

The church rejected those claims, describing them as false and misleading. “We categorically reject these allegations as false and misleading. To the best of our knowledge and based on information presently available to us, no such shooting occurred,” the statement said.

The Mission maintained that security personnel on duty acted only to protect worshippers and invited guests and to prevent the situation from escalating further.

Church leaders called for an impartial investigation into the incident and urged the public to avoid drawing conclusions before law enforcement authorities complete their work.

Investigations Continue

The differing accounts from the Ghana Police Service and the Kristo Asafo Mission have placed the incident under intense public scrutiny, with investigations expected to determine the full circumstances surrounding the events at Kwabenya.

While the Police have reported that preliminary findings indicate firearms were discharged and that Adwoa Safo sustained injuries, the church maintains that no shooting occurred and has challenged reports suggesting otherwise.

Authorities have not yet released further details on the nature of the injuries reported by the Police or the possible involvement of additional individuals.

As investigations continue, both the Police and the church have called for due process to be allowed to take its course, with the facts expected to emerge through ongoing inquiries by law enforcement agencies.
