GEPA Targets $1 Billion US Export Boom

Ghana has taken a bold step to transform its export fortunes with the official opening of the Ghana Trade House in Philadelphia, a landmark initiative expected to accelerate the country’s ambition of increasing non-traditional exports to the United States from $405.6 million in 2025 to an ambitious $1 billion by the end of 2026.

The facility, established by the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), represents Ghana’s first dedicated commercial foothold on the United States East Coast. It is expected to strengthen Ghana’s presence in one of the world’s largest consumer markets while creating new opportunities for exporters, investors, and businesses seeking to expand beyond Africa.

The Philadelphia Trade House joins Ghana’s expanding network of international commercial centres after similar facilities were opened in London earlier this year and Kenya in 2023. Together, these Trade Houses are designed to boost Ghana’s visibility in global markets, facilitate exports, attract investment, and connect Ghanaian businesses with strategic international partners.

One Stop Centre for Ghanaian Exporters

The Trade House was inaugurated on the sidelines of the Invest Ghana Business Forum and Exhibition in the United States, an event jointly organised by GEPA, the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), the Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA), and the Ghana Export and Import Bank (Ghana EXIM Bank).

The facility is positioned as a comprehensive commercial centre that will provide exporters with essential services including market intelligence, trade advisory, export matchmaking, product exhibitions, investment promotion, regulatory guidance on the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), and access to export financing through Ghana EXIM Bank.

Beyond facilitating trade, the centre is expected to strengthen economic diplomacy by connecting Ghanaian businesses with the country’s vibrant diaspora community in the United States while promoting stronger commercial ties between both nations.

US-Ghana Trade Relationship Reaches New Heights

The opening of the Trade House comes at a time when trade relations between Ghana and the United States are experiencing remarkable growth.

According to figures from the United States Trade Representative (USTR) and the U.S. Census Bureau, total bilateral goods trade between the two countries reached approximately $2.5 billion in 2025.

United States exports to Ghana increased significantly by 32.6 percent to $1.3 billion, while imports from Ghana stood at $1.2 billion.

The momentum has continued into 2026, with bilateral goods trade surging by more than 96 percent year on year in March alone. The impressive growth highlights the increasing demand for Ghanaian products in the American market and reinforces confidence that the country’s export ambitions are achievable.

Among Ghana’s leading exports to the United States in March 2026 were cocoa beans valued at $52.8 million and cocoa paste worth $40.9 million.

Ghana also continues to dominate the global yam export market, with the United States remaining the largest importer of the commodity.

The country is equally making steady progress in exporting processed and semi-processed products, an area the new Trade House is expected to strengthen significantly.

GEPA Celebrates Major Export Successes

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, GEPA Chief Executive Officer, Mr Francis Kojo Kwarteng Arthur, Esq., described the opening as both symbolic and strategic for Ghana’s international trade ambitions.

“Today, we formally establish our flagship Export Trade House here in Philadelphia, and as Ghana remains one of Africa’s most compelling destinations for doing business and investment, we are here to make entering global markets as smooth and achievable as possible.”

The GEPA CEO also highlighted the Authority’s impressive achievements in expanding export opportunities during the year.

According to him, GEPA led a delegation of Ghanaian horticultural producers to Fruit Logistica in Berlin, Germany, in February 2026, where participating businesses secured purchase orders worth more than $350 million.

He further disclosed that additional international trade missions to Macfrut in Italy and Salon International de l’Alimentation (SIAL) in Canada generated purchase orders exceeding $150 million and $100 million respectively, demonstrating the growing global demand for Ghanaian products.

Government Institutions Rally Behind Initiative

The inauguration attracted several senior government officials who reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Ghana’s export sector.

Among those present were the Chief Executive Officer of GIPC, Simon Madjie, the CEO of GFZA, Dr Mary Awusi, and the CEO of GoldBod Jewellery, Gertude Emefa Donkor.

Addressing participants at the Invest Ghana Business Forum, Simon Madjie described the Trade House as a strategic national asset capable of transforming Ghana’s investment landscape.

“When investors can see the quality of Ghanaian goods, understand the depth of local enterprise, and identify areas for partnership, they are more likely to move from curiosity to commitment.”

He further expressed the Centre’s commitment to working closely with GEPA, and other state institutions, Ghana’s diplomatic missions, the private sector, and diaspora business networks to convert trade visibility into investment outcomes.

Dr Mary Awusi also noted that the Ghana Trade House aligns with the Ghana Free Zones Authority’s vision of promoting export-led industrialisation.

For her part, the CEO of GFZA, Dr Mary Awusi said the Ghana Trade House will support the Authority’s broader objectives of deepening export-led growth, strengthening investor confidence, and expanding Ghana’s presence in global value chains.

A New Chapter for Ghana’s Export Economy

The launch of the Ghana Trade House in Philadelphia signals a significant milestone in Ghana’s strategy to diversify exports and strengthen its competitiveness in international markets.

As Ghana pushes toward its ambitious $1 billion export target, the facility is expected to become a powerful gateway connecting local producers with American buyers while attracting investment into value-added industries.

With global demand for Ghanaian products rising and institutional support growing stronger, the Philadelphia Trade House could become one of the country’s most important commercial platforms for driving sustainable export growth and positioning Ghana as a leading trade and investment hub in Africa.
