Ahanta West Targets School Upgrades After Classroom Collapse

The Municipal Chief Executive for Ahanta West, Honourable Ebenezer Kofi Aidoo has disclosed that the assembly has begun immediate interventions following the collapse of a makeshift classroom structure at Akitakyi. The revelation comes as authorities intensify efforts to secure safe learning spaces for affected pupils within the municipality.

Honourable Aidoo explained that the incident came to his attention about six weeks ago, prompting a direct inspection of the school site. In response, the MCE visited the community with the municipal works engineer, the municipal physical planner and other assembly staff to assess the damage and determine urgent needs.

Addressing the condition of the school, the MCE indicated that the assembly has prepared quantities for the construction of a replacement facility. The exercise, he noted, forms part of a broader commitment to restore normal academic activities without delay.

Additionally, Honourable Aidoo clarified that the scale of the school has been widely misunderstood in public discussions. He stated that enrolment figures currently stand at about 60 pupils, contrary to impressions that the school serves hundreds of learners.

The MCE further explained that a two unit classroom block remains functional and is currently accommodating the children. That structure, he stressed, remains stable and suitable for continued use while permanent works are prepared.

“We have assessed the situation thoroughly and put together the quantities for a new structure. The students are currently in a safe classroom block. Our focus now is to replace the collapsed facility and provide a better learning environment.”

Moreover, he described the collapsed structure as a temporary makeshift facility. The assembly, he added, has resolved to move away from temporary arrangements and invest in stronger school infrastructure.

Honourable Aidoo noted that the planned intervention extends beyond replacing the damaged classroom. The broader objective is to construct a complete two or three unit classroom block capable of serving surrounding communities including Akitakyi.

In view of this, the proposed development is expected to support enrolment growth from kindergarten through primary levels. The MCE emphasised that improved infrastructure would also encourage teachers to remain committed to service in the area.

School Renewal Programme Targets Widespread Infrastructure Deficit

Ahanta West Assembly launched an ambitious school renewal programme to tackle deteriorating educational infrastructure across the municipality. The initiative follows assessments showing that a significant number of schools require urgent rehabilitation.

Discussing the scale of the challenge, Honourable Aidoo revealed that the municipality oversees about 228 schools. A large proportion of those institutions, he stated, are currently operating under poor structural conditions.

A section of the programme focuses on the use of the assembly’s common fund to finance renovations. Resources from the District Performance Assessment Tool are also being channelled into the intervention to accelerate repairs.

Furthermore, the programme seeks to address multiple infrastructure deficits affecting teaching and learning. Schools lacking toilet facilities, damaged roofing systems and deteriorating wall finishes are expected to benefit from targeted upgrades.

“Nearly 60 per cent of our schools are not in good condition. That reality demands deliberate investment if we want teachers and pupils to work in safe and comfortable spaces.”

The assembly prioritises long term rehabilitation across the municipality. The aim is to ensure that educational facilities remain functional and supportive of academic growth.

Honourable Aidoo also reaffirmed that the Akitakyi case represents only one aspect of a much larger municipal challenge. For that reason, the School Renewal Programme has been structured as a multi year intervention with measurable targets.

Similarly, the MCE disclosed that temporary solutions are being pursued while larger construction plans advance. Within weeks, the assembly expects to complete an improved interim structure for displaced pupils.

“We want our teachers to teach in comfort and our children to study with confidence. Every school deserves facilities that show government values education.”

Looking ahead, Honourable Aidoo said the assembly intends to transform the educational landscape within four years. He added that the renewal agenda is designed to ensure schools across Ahanta West receive sustained investment and stronger institutional support.

The MCE finally assured residents that the municipality remains committed to restoring confidence in public education infrastructure. His remarks underscored a broader ambition to ensure every child in Ahanta West studies in a secure and dignified environment.
