Ghana has taken another step towards strengthening local technical capacity in the upstream petroleum sector after the Petroleum Commission signed a US$15 million partnership with Halliburton Ghana Operations Limited to support petroleum engineering education, research and skills development at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
The agreement is expected to provide petroleum engineering students and researchers with access to industry-standard digital technologies used by global oil and gas companies, while strengthening collaboration between academia and industry at a time when Ghana continues to pursue greater local participation across the petroleum value chain.
The partnership centres on the donation of advanced petroleum engineering software by Halliburton to KNUST’s Department of Petroleum Engineering, alongside technical training programmes for students and faculty members and support for research in upstream petroleum operations.
The initiative reflects growing recognition that developing highly skilled local professionals is essential if Ghana is to maximise the long-term value of its oil and gas resources.
Building local expertise for the upstream sector
While Ghana has made significant progress in local content development since commercial oil production began in 2010, industry experts continue to stress that sustained investment in technical education remains critical to strengthening indigenous participation across exploration, drilling, reservoir engineering and field development.
