Producer Inflation Plunges to 3.5% in June

Ghana’s producer price inflation has recorded a significant slowdown, offering fresh signs that cost pressures facing businesses are easing. New figures released by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) show that the Year on Year Producer Price Inflation (PPI) for June 2026 dropped sharply to 3.5 percent, down from 5.6 percent recorded in May 2026.

The latest decline marks one of the most notable reductions in producer inflation this year and could provide further encouragement for manufacturers, investors and policymakers as the country continues to stabilize prices after years of elevated inflationary pressures.

The data also revealed that producer prices declined by 3.7 percent on a Month on Month basis, highlighting a broad reduction in the prices producers received for their goods and services during June.

Industrial Prices Record Major Decline

The Industrial Producer Price Index (I-PPI), which measures price changes received by industrial producers, also reflected the easing trend.

According to the GSS, industrial producer inflation fell to 3.3 percent in June 2026 from 6.0 percent in May, representing a decline of 2.7 percentage points within a single month.

On a monthly basis, industrial producer prices contracted by 4.2 percent between May and June, suggesting that businesses across key industrial sectors experienced falling selling prices over the period.

The sharp decline indicates that inflationary pressures within Ghana’s productive sectors are gradually weakening, a development that may eventually translate into more stable consumer prices if the trend continues.

Manufacturing Sector Shows Mixed Performance

Although overall producer inflation slowed considerably, manufacturing industries continued to display varying price movements across different product groups.

The GSS reported that 14 out of the 23 major manufacturing groups recorded inflation rates above the manufacturing average of 3.5 percent during June.

The manufacture of fabricated metal products, excluding machinery and equipment, posted the highest inflation rate at 26.3 percent. This was followed by the manufacture of leather and related products, which recorded inflation of 19.1 percent.

These sectors continue to experience relatively stronger price increases despite the broader slowdown across the economy.

On the opposite end, manufacturers of other non metallic mineral products experienced deflation, recording an inflation rate of negative 2.3 percent, making it the weakest performing manufacturing category during the month.

Mining Sector Loses Momentum

The mining and quarrying sector also recorded slower inflation during June, reflecting moderating cost pressures within one of Ghana’s most important export industries.

According to the report, the extraction of crude oil and natural gas recorded an inflation rate of 5.0 percent.

Meanwhile, inflation for the mining of metal ores dropped significantly. The sector’s inflation rate declined from 6.5 percent in May to just 0.7 percent in June, representing a reduction of 5.8 percentage points.

Mining support service activities recorded inflation of 5.8 percent during June, although the sector continued to exhibit relatively stable pricing conditions compared to previous months.

The latest figures suggest that price increases across mining operations are becoming more contained, despite global commodity market uncertainties.

Industrial Trends Reflect Changing Business Conditions

The GSS data also highlighted the movement of industrial price indices over the past year.

Industry excluding construction increased steadily from June 2025 before reaching a peak in March 2026. However, the index eased in June 2026, suggesting that industrial price growth has begun slowing after several months of expansion.

Manufacturing followed a relatively stable path throughout the period, rising gradually before leveling off during the first half of 2026.

Mining and quarrying continued to record the highest index values among all industrial sectors despite experiencing periodic fluctuations.

The electricity and gas sector remained relatively stable throughout the year. After recording a noticeable increase in January 2026, the index settled at 232.6 by June.

Water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities also continued their steady upward movement, rising gradually from June 2025 to June 2026.

What the Declining Producer Inflation Means

Producer Price Inflation serves as an important leading indicator for the economy because it measures changes in prices received by producers before products reach consumers.

When producer inflation declines, businesses generally face lower pricing pressures, reducing the need to pass higher production costs on to households.

While lower producer inflation does not automatically result in lower consumer prices, economists often view sustained declines as a positive development that can eventually support broader price stability.

The latest figures therefore strengthen expectations that inflationary pressures within Ghana’s productive sectors are becoming increasingly manageable.

Businesses could benefit from lower input cost growth, while consumers may eventually experience slower price increases if the easing trend continues over the coming months.

Investors Await Next Economic Signals

The latest producer inflation figures arrive at a time when investors and financial markets are closely monitoring Ghana’s broader inflation outlook and monetary policy direction.

With producer prices now cooling significantly, market participants will be watching upcoming consumer inflation data and the Bank of Ghana’s policy decisions to determine whether the improving price environment can be sustained.

For manufacturers and businesses, the sharp decline offers cautious optimism that production costs may remain under control, supporting profitability and investment decisions.

If the downward trend persists, it could further strengthen confidence in Ghana’s ongoing economic recovery while creating a more stable environment for businesses and consumers alike.
