Global Partners Back Ghana’s ESG Growth Vision

Global Partners Back Ghana’s ESG Growth Vision

Ghana is attracting renewed international attention as leading development institutions intensify efforts to advance environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards, a move expected to strengthen sustainable investment, improve corporate resilience and accelerate private sector growth.

The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, has brought together some of the country’s most influential development partners to deepen collaboration, improve coordination and maximize the impact of ESG initiatives across Ghana’s economy.

The high level ESG Roundtable for Development Partners brought together representatives from the World Bank Group, GIZ, KfW, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), and other key organizations. The discussions focused on sharing experiences, identifying opportunities for collaboration and aligning efforts to promote sustainable business practices that can drive long term economic development.

ESG moves to the forefront of Ghana’s economic transformation

Opening the roundtable, IFC Senior Country Officer for Ghana, Yewande Giwa, emphasized that ESG principles have become indispensable for businesses seeking to remain competitive in today’s global economy.

She explained that environmental, social and governance considerations are no longer optional additions to corporate strategy but have become central to attracting investment, managing risk and creating sustainable businesses.

“Environmental, social and governance considerations are becoming ever more important. For IFC, ESG is not a parallel agenda but an integral part of the work that we do and an essential part of private sector development.”

According to Ms. Giwa, IFC’s sustainability framework and corporate governance methodology are helping businesses strengthen operational performance, improve transparency and accountability, engage more effectively with surrounding communities and deliver stronger development outcomes.

She explained that the roundtable was intentionally designed to create a practical platform where development partners could exchange ideas, coordinate ongoing projects and identify areas where collaboration could produce even greater impact.

“We all have the same goal, but we are implementing different activities. There is a clear opportunity for coordination, improved visibility of our efforts and stronger collaboration so that together we can make a greater impact.”

ESG risks are now business risks

One of the strongest messages emerging from the discussions was that ESG risks have evolved into direct business risks that companies can no longer afford to ignore.

Environmental and Social Risk Management Specialist at IFC, Damilola Sobo Smith, highlighted how poor environmental practices, weak governance and inadequate social safeguards can significantly affect business performance. “Environmental and social risks do translate into business risks,” she said.

She pointed to environmental compliance failures, waste management challenges and operational disruptions as examples of issues capable of damaging profitability, corporate reputation and long term business continuity.

The message underscored the growing global consensus that businesses must integrate ESG considerations into strategic planning, investment decisions and enterprise risk management if they are to remain competitive.

IFC supports sustainable banking reforms

The roundtable also highlighted the role of IFC’s Integrated ESG Programme in strengthening Ghana’s financial sector.

According to Ms. Smith, the programme is supporting private sector companies in adopting internationally recognized environmental and social standards while working closely with the Bank of Ghana to reinforce implementation of the Ghana Sustainable Banking Principles.

The initiative is helping financial institutions strengthen environmental and social risk management, improve governance structures and incorporate responsible lending practices into their operations.

She further noted that Ghana continues to distinguish itself as one of the region’s leaders in advancing regulatory reforms that promote sustainable finance and responsible business conduct.

These reforms are expected to improve investor confidence while strengthening the resilience of Ghana’s financial institutions.

International partnerships drive lasting impact

Another major highlight of the meeting was the importance of long standing partnerships in expanding ESG adoption across Ghana.

Deputy Head of Cooperation at the Swiss Embassy, Magdalena Wüst, reaffirmed Switzerland’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s sustainable finance agenda through SECO’s long running collaboration with IFC.

She explained that a strong and sustainable financial sector is essential for attracting investment, supporting business expansion and creating employment opportunities.

According to Ms. Wüst, SECO has partnered with IFC in Ghana for more than ten years to strengthen environmental and social risk management, support regulatory reforms and build the capacity of financial institutions to implement sustainable banking standards. “Advancing sustainable finance requires collaboration, and partnerships like ours with IFC help strengthen institutions and create lasting impact,” she said.

Her remarks reflected the growing confidence among development partners that coordinated efforts will produce stronger and more sustainable economic outcomes for Ghana.

Shared commitment to Ghana’s sustainable future

The roundtable concluded with participants reaffirming their commitment to deepen cooperation, leverage each institution’s expertise and strengthen collective action to address emerging ESG opportunities and challenges.

The meeting demonstrated that no single institution can successfully drive sustainable development alone. Instead, stronger partnerships between international organizations, regulators, financial institutions and the private sector will be critical in building a resilient economy capable of attracting responsible investment.

As global investors increasingly prioritize companies with strong ESG credentials, Ghana appears well positioned to benefit from coordinated reforms that promote transparency, accountability and sustainable business practices.

With IFC leading efforts to unite international development partners behind a common vision, the country is taking another important step toward creating a business environment where profitability, sustainability and long term development go hand in hand.

If these collaborative efforts continue to gain momentum, Ghana could further strengthen its position as one of Africa’s emerging destinations for responsible investment while ensuring that economic growth delivers meaningful social and environmental benefits for generations to come.
