The Argentine superstar’s first-half masterclass not only inspired the Herons to a winning start but also saw him become the outright leading scorer in Leagues Cup history with 14 goals, surpassing every player to feature in the competition since its inception.
Inter Miami, champions in 2023 and runners-up in 2025, recovered from conceding an early goal to produce an impressive attacking display that underlined their ambitions of reclaiming the title.
Messi drew Miami level in the 11th minute with a stunning first-time volley before adding a second just before halftime after another well-worked move involving homegrown fullback Noah Allen.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner then turned provider in first-half stoppage time, delivering a corner that was headed home by defender Micael to give Inter Miami a commanding advantage before the break.
Telasco Segovia also found the net for the MLS side, while Atlético San Luis managed a second-half response that ultimately proved too little to prevent defeat in the tournament opener.
Messi Rewrites Leagues Cup History
The opening goal carried extra significance as it moved Messi level with the competition’s previous scoring record held by Dennis Bouanga before his second strike took him clear on 14 career Leagues Cup goals.
The milestone is another remarkable achievement in a tournament where Messi has consistently delivered since arriving in North America. Interim head coach Guillermo Hoyos reserved special praise for his captain, comparing his technique to one of history’s greatest artists. “The guys were showing me the first goal he scored and how he made that shot. It was something very complicated,” Hoyos said. “If we were talking about painting, I will call him Picasso.”
Allen Shines as Miami Eye Another Deep Run
Although Messi stole the headlines, Noah Allen produced one of the finest performances of his young career. The 22-year-old academy graduate assisted both of Messi’s goals before completing a hat-trick of assists by setting up Segovia.
Hoyos highlighted Allen’s vision and timing, describing his first assist as “something very, very difficult to do” while praising the defender’s ability to exploit spaces behind the opposition.
The Inter Miami coach also acknowledged the physical demands of the encounter, with humid conditions testing both teams throughout the contest. “I think it was a very exhausting match of a lot of ball possession, coming from both teams,” Hoyos said. “We’re very happy because of the result.”
The victory reinforces Inter Miami’s status as one of the favourites for this year’s competition. Having lifted the inaugural Leagues Cup title of the Messi era in 2023 before reaching the final again in 2025, the Herons have developed a reputation for thriving in the tournament.
