Ghana midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi says the opportunity to work and learn under Coventry City head coach Frank Lampard was one of the biggest factors behind his decision to join the newly promoted Premier League club, as he embarks on the next chapter of his rapidly rising career.

The 20-year-old completed a long-term move from Danish Superliga side FC Nordsjaelland, with the transfer subject to international clearance. “I’m excited to be at this club,” Yirenkyi said after completing the move. “I’ve heard so much about it and I really feel positive about being here.”

Although Coventry City did not disclose the transfer fee, the deal is widely believed to be worth around €30 million, making Yirenkyi the most expensive player in Coventry City’s history and the biggest sale ever recorded by FC Nordsjaelland.

The transfer marks another significant milestone for the Ghana international, whose impressive performances in Denmark and with the Black Stars have established him as one of Africa’s brightest young midfielders.

His move also gives him the opportunity to showcase his talent on the Premier League stage as Coventry return to England’s top flight after nearly 24 years outside the division.

Yirenkyi arrives at Coventry after a remarkable rise through the renowned Right to Dream Academy in Ghana, which has produced several top-level talents. After joining FC Nordsjaelland in 2024, he made his senior debut later that year at just 18 before cementing his place in the first team.

His outstanding 2025-26 campaign saw him make 34 appearances as Nordsjaelland finished third in the Danish Superliga to secure qualification for the UEFA Conference League. His consistency earned him the Danish Superliga Young Player of the Year award and a place in the league’s Team of the Year.

Learning From a Midfield Legend

Despite his rapid rise, Yirenkyi believes there is still much to learn, and he sees no better mentor than Frank Lampard, one of England’s greatest midfielders.

Lampard enjoyed an illustrious playing career, winning multiple Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, FA Cups and League Cups with Chelsea.

Renowned for his leadership, technical quality and remarkable goalscoring record from midfield, he also became Chelsea’s all-time leading scorer while earning more than 100 caps for England.

For Yirenkyi, the chance to work under someone with such vast experience was a major attraction.

“When I spoke to the Head Coach about the plans and the style, it’s something I really like, and I look forward to learning from him. I’m still young so I want to learn from the Head Coach, the other players and work really hard for the team.”

His comments reflect a maturity that has become a hallmark of his development. Rather than focusing solely on his record transfer or Premier League status, the midfielder has placed greater emphasis on improving his game under one of football’s most accomplished former midfielders.

Ready for the Premier League Challenge

Yirenkyi’s arrival comes after an impressive year on the international stage. He played a key role for Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, featuring alongside Brandon Thomas-Asante and scoring the winning goal against Panama.

Coincidentally, Thomas-Asante, who will also now be his club teammate, set up Yirenkyi deep into stoppage time for his winner against Panama at the World Cup.

He has already amassed 15 senior appearances for the Black Stars, underlining the trust placed in him despite his young age.

Coventry’s return to the Premier League presents both the club and the midfielder with an exciting opportunity. After spending nearly a quarter of a century outside England’s top division, the Sky Blues are looking to establish themselves among the country’s elite, and Yirenkyi is expected to play a central role in that ambition.

The Ghanaian’s blend of composure, intelligence on the ball and defensive work rate makes him well suited to Lampard’s preferred style of play. Under the guidance of a coach who excelled in a similar position, Yirenkyi will hope to refine his game further while adapting to the intensity of the Premier League.

He is equally eager to experience the atmosphere generated by Coventry’s supporters, saying he has heard plenty about the club’s passionate fanbase. “I’ve also heard a lot about the fans, they’re incredible and I can’t wait to play in front of them,” he added.

Having conquered Denmark and announced himself on the international stage, Yirenkyi now faces his biggest test yet. With the guidance of Frank Lampard and the platform of the Premier League, the gifted Ghanaian midfielder has the opportunity to continue his development while helping write a new chapter in Coventry City’s return to the top flight.
