The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) ended the final trading session of the week on a subdued note, with the benchmark Composite Index slipping despite a dramatic surge in trading activity.
At the close of trading on Friday, August 7, 2026, a total of 2,905,344 shares changed hands, representing a market value of GH¢9.19 million. The figures marked a remarkable 96 percent improvement in trading volume and a 149 percent increase in turnover compared with the previous trading session on Thursday, August 6.
The sharp rise in market activity signals renewed investor participation, even as the overall market struggled to maintain its upward momentum.
GSE Composite Index Slips
The benchmark GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) fell by 11.06 points, equivalent to 0.07 percent, to close at 15,187.47 points.
The decline capped a challenging week for the broader market, with the index recording a 1.6 percent loss over the past week.
Despite the latest weakness, the GSE-CI continues to deliver an impressive performance over longer periods. The index has gained 2.58 percent over the past four weeks and is up a staggering 73.17 percent since the beginning of the year.
The figures underline the strength of the Ghanaian equities market in 2026, even as investors contend with short-term profit-taking and mixed movements across listed stocks.
Financial Stocks Also Take a Hit
The financial sector was not spared the pressure.
The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) declined by 0.18 percent to close at 8,021.23 points.
The index recorded a 2.63 percent loss over the past week and a 2.66 percent decline over four weeks. However, financial stocks remain firmly in positive territory on a year-to-date basis, with the GSE-FSI posting a 72.6 percent gain.
The contrasting short-term and year-to-date figures suggest that investors may still be sitting on substantial gains despite the recent correction.
Dannex Ayrton Starwin Leads Gainers
While the broader market ended lower, several equities managed to post significant gains.
Dannex Ayrton Starwin emerged as the strongest performer among the gainers, climbing 8.33 percent to close at GH¢0.52 per share.
Clydestone Ghana followed with a 2.95 percent increase, while SIC Insurance Company advanced 2.57 percent.
Ecobank Transnational also attracted buying interest, gaining 2.31 percent by the end of the session.
The gains provided some relief in an otherwise mixed market, highlighting the divergent performance of individual equities.

Société Générale Suffers Heavy Loss
On the losing side, Société Générale Ghana recorded the steepest decline of the session.
The bank’s share price plunged 9.77 percent to close at GH¢6.00 per share, making it the biggest loser among the equities traded.
Intravenous Infusions followed closely, losing 8.62 percent.
Atlantic Lithium also suffered a significant decline of 5.4 percent, while TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana recorded a smaller loss of 0.28 percent.
The sharp declines among some listed companies contributed to the marginal fall in the benchmark index and reinforced the cautious mood that has emerged in the market over the past week.
Hords Leads Trading Volume
Despite the decline in the indices, trading activity was exceptionally strong.
Hords recorded the highest trading volume during the session, with 758,523 shares changing hands.
MTN Ghana followed with 620,559 shares, while Kasapreko recorded 472,004 traded shares.
Intravenous Infusions also featured prominently, with 335,109 shares traded during the session.
The concentration of trading among these equities indicates that investors remained highly active despite the broader market retreat.
The substantial increase in both volume and turnover also suggests that the Friday session attracted considerably more market participation than the previous trading day.
29 Equities Participate in Trading
A total of 29 GSE-listed equities participated in trading during the session.
Of these, four recorded gains, while six ended the day lower. The remaining equities closed without significant price changes.
The imbalance between gainers and losers helped push the market slightly into negative territory, although the decline remained relatively modest compared with the substantial gains accumulated by the market earlier in the year.
Market Capitalisation Hits GH¢285.8bn
The total market capitalisation of the Ghana Stock Exchange currently stands at approximately GH¢285.8 billion, equivalent to about US$24.3 billion.
This sizeable market value reflects the significant expansion of Ghana’s equities market and the strong performance recorded by several listed companies in 2026.
Despite the recent weekly decline, the GSE’s 73.17 percent year-to-date gain remains one of the most striking features of the market’s performance.
Investors will now be watching closely to determine whether the recent weakness signals a temporary correction or the beginning of a broader shift in market sentiment.
For now, the numbers tell a mixed story. Trading activity is surging, market capitalisation remains substantial and year-to-date returns are exceptionally strong. Yet, the latest session shows that investors are also becoming more selective, with some stocks attracting strong buying interest while others face intense selling pressure.
As the market heads into the next trading week, attention will focus on whether the GSE Composite Index can regain its lost ground or whether the recent correction will deepen.
The strong rise in trading volume and turnover, however, suggests that the Ghanaian stock market remains firmly on investors’ radar.
