Newmont targets a significant boost in operational throughput across its flagship Ahafo South Mine operations following the deployment of premier heavy machinery designed to optimize material extractions.

The initiative introduces the high-capacity Cat® 6040 Next Generation Hydraulic Mining Shovel at the Ahafo South Mine, positioning the facility as an early global adopter of next-tier loading infrastructure.

By integrating this technology into primary pit activities, the mining titan aims to overcome cycle-time bottlenecks, elevate daily tonnage throughput, and enforce stringent safety standards to preserve long-term asset integrity.

“This investment reflects our commitment to innovation, operational excellence, and creating long-term value for our people, communities, and stakeholders.”

The deployment establishes a technological milestone for the group, making Ahafo South the premier operation within Newmont’s global network and one of only three mine sites worldwide to integrate this specific hydraulic loading machinery into active extraction.

Engineered specifically for heavy-duty primary loading, the 400-tonne class shovel features upgraded twin Cat® C32B engines, optimized hydraulic oil flow, and an expanded bucket capacity paired with enhanced breakout force.

These mechanical refinements allow seamless pairing with haul fleets achieving four-pass loading on 147-tonne Cat 785 trucks and eight-pass cycles on 327-tonne Cat 796 AC haulers thereby reducing unit loading costs, mitigating fuel inefficiencies, and increasing overall fleet productivity.

Technological Modernization and Global Benchmarking

The integration of the Cat® 6040 Next Generation shovel sets a benchmark for primary loading operations across Sub-Saharan Africa’s extractive sector.

Delivered and supported by Mantrac Ghana, the machinery incorporates Cat Payload technology, an onboard system that measures real-time bucket weights to eliminate underloading and prevent vehicle frame stress caused by overloading.

This dynamic payload management optimizes haul-cycle efficiency across the pit floor, directly lowering fuel burn per tonne moved.

Furthermore, the machinery aligns with Newmont’s Heavy Mobile Equipment Safety Systems Standard. It is outfitted with advanced risk-mitigation features, including dual fire suppression systems, emergency egress pathways, camera monitoring arrays, and automatic shutdown controls.

These safeguards minimize operational downtime resulting from technical trips or safety interruptions, securing continuous pit availability.

Quantitative Impact on Ahafo South’s Productivity

Replacing legacy loading units with the Next Generation 6040 shovel directly impacts Ahafo South’s operational efficiency and annual gold recovery trajectories.

The shovel’s twin-engine architecture delivers up to 1,550 kW of rated power, enabling peak digging performance of up to 4,000 tonnes of material per hour, which significantly reduces truck waiting times at the loading face and maximizes the utilization factor of the transport fleet.

In terms of key operational benchmarks, standard loading systems typically deliver between 2,800 and 3,200 tonnes per hour, whereas the Cat® 6040 Next Gen system delivers up to 4,000 tonnes per hour. Moreover, while older setups require 5 to 6 passes to fill a Cat 785 truck, the new shovel achieves a full pass match in just 4 passes.

Finally, structural design life is extended from approximately 45,000 operating hours in legacy units to over 60,000 targeted nominal hours in the new platform, powered by dual Cat® C32B engines.

The increased breakout force allows the shovel to process hard rock formations and high-density ores without experiencing hydraulic lag.

By accelerating the rate at which run-of-mine (ROM) ore is moved from the pit to the crushing plants, Newmont stabilizes feed rates to the processing mill, preventing throughput drops and maintaining peak mill capacity.

Long-Term Asset Value and Sector Implications

Beyond immediate volume output gains, the asset upgrade strengthens the long-term cost curve of the Ahafo South Mine.

The shovel’s re-engineered undercarriage and variable-demand hydraulic system reduce thermal stress on vital components, lowering maintenance interventions and extending major overhaul intervals past 60,000 operating hours.

Having produced over 10 million ounces of gold since commercial operations began in 2006, Ahafo South remains a cornerstone of Ghana’s extractive economy.

Deploying cutting-edge capital equipment demonstrates how capital expenditure on high-efficiency, technology-driven loading tools can offset inflationary pressures, fluctuating ore grades, and rising energy costs.

As regional producers navigate changing commodity dynamics, Newmont’s deployment establishes a blueprint for technology-led operational sustainability across African surface mining.
