Greater Accra Region dominated the 16th Korean Ambassador’s Cup Taekwondo Championship, winning medals across almost every age category in kyorugi and poomsae to emerge as the Best Regional Team.
The championship which was held at the Borteyman Sports Complex in Accra, brought together athletes, coaches, referees and officials from across Ghana.
Setorme Tornyevah and Mina Afeonoko from Greater Accra, won gold in the 10–11 years female categories, while Eric Agorku, Ismael Halid and Yoofi Aggrey-Fynn also secured gold medals in the male divisions.
Athletes from the Western, Volta, Upper East and Central regions also featured prominently on the podium across various age and weight categories.
Nine individual awards were presented to standout performers at the championship.
Gaddiel Cromwell of the Western Region and Setorme Tornyevah of Greater Accra were named the best male and female athletes respectively in the 10–11 years kyorugi category.
Issah Zulkif and Ramatu Salifu also from the Greater Accra region received the awards for the best male and female cadet kyorugi athletes, while Ismael Halid (Greater Accra) and Afua Otoo (Western region) were recognised as the best male and female junior kyorugi athletes.
In poomsae, Yoofi Aggrey-Fynn and Sitta Tornyevah were named the best male and female performers respectively, while Greater Accra took home the Best Regional Team award.
Korean Embassy Pledges Continued Support
The Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Ghana, H.E. Kyongsig Park pledged the continued support of the Korean Embassy for the development of Taekwondo in Ghana.
Ambassador Park made the commitment while delivering congratulatory remarks at the championship, now in its 16th edition.
The ambassador was impressed not only by the quality of competition but also by the discipline and sportsmanship displayed by the young athletes.
“I was truly impressed by the skill, energy, and determination of our young athletes. More importantly, I was pleased to see the respect and sportsmanship they showed toward one another.”

He said the conduct of the athletes reflected the core values of Taekwondo, including discipline, perseverance, self-control and respect for others.
Ambassador Park also congratulated Ghana Taekwondo Federation (GTF) President Frederick Lartey Otu on his re-election and reaffirmed Korea’s commitment to supporting the sport in Ghana.
He announced that uniforms, belts and other Taekwondo equipment donated by members of the Korean community in Macao have been presented to the Federation. Additional equipment from Korea’s Taekwondo Promotion Foundation is also expected later this year.
“I hope these contributions will provide better opportunities for young Ghanaian athletes to practise Taekwondo and develop their talents,” Ambassador Park said, adding that the initiative demonstrates Korea’s commitment to the sport “from the grassroots level to the international stage.”
GTF Sets Out New Direction
Ghana Taekwondo Federation (GTF) President Frederick Lartey Otu outlined the Federation’s plans under its new administration, which assumed office following the GTF Elective Congress on July 18, 2026, and was subsequently confirmed by World Taekwondo.
“We recognise that we have inherited an important legacy. But we equally recognise that we have a responsibility to build upon that legacy and take Ghana Taekwondo to the next level.”

He said the administration’s vision is to build a more inclusive, professionally managed and internationally competitive federation.
To advance this agenda, the GTF Board has established a Technical Committee chaired by Technical Director Simon Gluikpor. The committee also includes Fayise Selorm, Bernard Ampim Darko, Sabastian Atatina Benon and Percy Konadu Yiadom.
Regional Awareness Campaign to Begin in September
The GTF will launch a Regional Taekwondo Awareness Campaign in the Ashanti Region in September 2026 as part of efforts to take the sport to schools and communities with limited access to sporting opportunities.
The campaign will initially focus on five regions: Northern, Upper West, Bono, Central and Ashanti, with the aim of identifying and developing young talent.
“There are talented young boys and girls in deprived communities across Ghana who simply need an opportunity, proper coaching and the right support. Our responsibility as a Federation is to find them.”

The Federation hopes to establish a clear athlete development pathway beginning at the school and community levels and progressing through clubs, regional structures and the national team to continental and international competition.
