The Energy Commission has certified 345 electrical wiring professionals in Accra as Ghana moves to strengthen technical standards around an electricity system increasingly shaped by solar power, electric vehicles and other emerging technologies.

The certification was announced at the Commission’s 25th Electrical Wiring Certification and Award Ceremony, held under the theme, “Setting the Standard: Powering Ghana’s Future – EV, Solar, and Beyond.”

The ceremony also marked the launch of a revised Electrical Wiring Code developed in collaboration with the Ghana Standards Authority, providing updated requirements and practical guidance for electrical wiring professionals.

Revised Standards Target A Changing Power Sector

The timing of the revised Code is significant as Ghana’s electricity landscape becomes more technologically diverse.

Solar installations, electric-vehicle charging infrastructure, battery systems and other distributed-energy technologies are creating electrical applications that require technicians to work beyond conventional household and commercial wiring.

Poor installation practices in such systems can create safety risks while also affecting equipment performance and the reliability of electricity infrastructure.

The revised Code is therefore intended to give certified professionals a current technical framework for undertaking electrical work safely as the sector evolves.

The Commission’s emphasis on certification also reflects the growing importance of technical competence as Ghana expands renewable-energy and electric-mobility infrastructure.

Digital Verification Strengthens Consumer Protection

The Commission is also moving to make certification easier to verify.

Acting Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission, Adwoa Serwaa Bondzie, said more than 27,500 digital verification tokens had been generated since the digital verification system became operational in July 2026.

“The digital verification system is improving traceability and consumer protection by making it easier to authenticate certified electrical wiring professionals.”

The shift from paper certificates to digital authentication provides an additional layer of accountability in a sector where consumers may not always be able to independently establish whether an electrician is properly certified.

For Ghana’s expanding electricity market, that distinction matters. The growth of solar and other electrical technologies is creating new opportunities for installation businesses, but the quality of those installations can directly affect safety, energy efficiency and the longevity of equipment.

Certification Base Expands Across Ghana

The latest certification brings the total number of professionals certified under the programme since its establishment to 19,442.

The Commission’s continued certification drive is intended to ensure that the growth of Ghana’s electricity infrastructure is accompanied by an adequately trained workforce.

Chairman of the ceremony, Prof. Ernest Ofori Asamoah, urged the newly certified professionals to maintain high standards in their work and continue developing their technical capabilities.

He also stressed the importance of adapting to technological changes rather than relying solely on existing practices.

“Professionals must continue to learn, unlearn and adapt as technology changes.”

His message is particularly relevant to the transition towards distributed energy. An electrician working on a conventional building may increasingly encounter rooftop solar, battery storage, smart electrical systems or EV charging equipment, requiring skills that extend beyond traditional wiring.

Women Remain Underrepresented

The Commission also used the ceremony to highlight the need for greater participation by women in the electrical wiring profession.

Bondzie called for more women to enter the sector, noting that female participation remains below expectations.

Increasing participation would have implications beyond workforce numbers. Ghana’s expanding energy market will require a larger pool of qualified technicians as electrification, renewable-energy deployment and electric mobility create additional demand for specialised skills.

The broader issue is therefore not simply how many people receive certificates, but whether certification is producing a workforce capable of supporting the next phase of Ghana’s energy transition.

Skilled Workforce Critical To Energy Transition

Ghana’s investment in renewable energy and emerging electricity technologies will ultimately depend on the availability of professionals who can install, maintain and safely integrate those systems.

That makes electrical certification part of the country’s wider energy infrastructure.

As solar deployment increases and electric vehicles gradually create new electricity demand, technical failures at the installation level could undermine consumer confidence and create avoidable safety and reliability problems.

The revised Electrical Wiring Code, combined with professional certification and digital verification, provides a mechanism for reducing some of those risks.

The bigger test, however, will be whether the standards are consistently enforced and whether professionals continue receiving training as technologies change.

For Ghana, expanding generation capacity and deploying new energy technologies will only deliver their full value if the infrastructure connecting those technologies to homes, businesses and industries is installed and maintained to appropriate standards.

The certification of 345 professionals therefore represents more than another industry award ceremony.

It forms part of the less visible but essential workforce infrastructure required to make Ghana’s evolving electricity system safer, more reliable and capable of supporting the country’s transition towards solar power, electric mobility and increasingly decentralised energy systems.
