Medeama SC have set their sights on reaching the group stage of the CAF Champions League while also aiming to defend their Ghana Premier League title in the 2026/27 season.

The Tarkwa-based club will begin their continental campaign against Congolese giants TP Mazembe on Sunday, September 6, in the first preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.

The first leg will be played at the TnA Stadium in Tarkwa, marking the first time the venue will host a match of such continental magnitude.

Medeama are approaching the tie with clear ambitions of progressing through the qualifying rounds and securing a place in the group stage of Africa’s premier club competition.

The club’s Communications Director, Benjamin Willie Graham, revealed that reaching the group stage has been identified as the primary continental objective following discussions between the technical team and management. “Going into this Africa campaign, we have set our sights on the group stages,” Graham said.

He explained that the target has been clearly communicated to head coach Tanko Ibrahim and that management has provided the necessary backing to help him achieve the club’s ambitions.

“He knows that this is his prime target as a coach. Management has met with him and discussed this, and there is a lot of support for what he wants to achieve.”

According to Graham, Medeama’s recruitment during the off-season has also been shaped largely by the coach’s requirements, with management working to provide him with the squad he believes can compete on multiple fronts. “If you take a look at the signings we have put together, most of them come from what he wants,” Graham explained.

Medeama Backed to Compete on All Fronts

The club believes the strengthening of the squad will be crucial as Medeama prepare to combine domestic title defence with their continental ambitions.

Graham stressed that management has responded positively to the coach’s demands and expects the new additions to contribute to the club’s pursuit of its targets.

“What he wants management to do is what they have done for him,” he said, highlighting the level of backing given to the technical team during the transfer window.

Medeama’s domestic objective is equally ambitious, with the club determined to retain the Ghana Premier League crown after establishing itself as one of the country’s leading sides in recent seasons. “We have given him the target already in the Premier League: defend the title,” Graham stated.

The Mauve and Yellows have also been tasked with mounting a serious challenge for the Ghana FA Cup as part of a broader plan to compete for honours on all fronts.

Mazembe To Provide Stern Test in Tarkwa

The clash with Mazembe provides an immediate test of those ambitions. The Congolese giants are among the continent’s most decorated clubs and have extensive experience in African inter-club competitions.

Medeama, however, are no strangers to facing the Lubumbashi-based side. The two clubs last met in the 2016 CAF Confederation Cup group stage, giving the upcoming encounter an added layer of history.

This time, the meeting comes in the Champions League, with Medeama seeking to make the most of home advantage in what promises to be a significant occasion for Tarkwa.

The TnA Stadium has a fortress for Medeama, losing just once in the league at this venue last season. It will now take centre stage on the continental football front when it hosts the first-leg encounter on Sunday.

For the club, the objective is to navigate past Mazembe, progress through the preliminary rounds and ultimately reach the Champions League group stage.

At the same time, Medeama want to ensure their continental adventure does not derail their domestic ambitions.

Graham insists management and the technical team are aligned on the road ahead, with clear targets already established. “We have a clear mandate on where we want to go and how we want to achieve those things,” he concluded.
