GSE Loses Another GH¢2.4bn as Market Selloff Deepens

The Ghana Stock Exchange suffered another bruising trading session as the market’s total capitalisation plunged by approximately GH¢2.4 billion just a day after losing about GH¢2.9 billion, while the benchmark index extended its recent losses despite maintaining a strong year-to-date performance.

Trading data at the close of the session showed a broad deterioration in market sentiment, with losing equities significantly outnumbering gainers.

The latest performance comes as investors continue to navigate heightened movements across individual stocks, with several listed companies recording sharp price declines.

Market Capitalisation Drops to GH¢280.6 Billion

The most striking development was the decline in the overall market capitalisation of the Ghana Stock Exchange.

Market capitalisation fell from approximately GH¢283 billion to GH¢280.6 billion, representing a decline of about GH¢2.4 billion in a single session.

In US dollar terms, the market was valued at approximately $24.8 billion at the end of trading.

The decline highlights the pressure facing equities as several stocks recorded significant losses during the session.

Although the GSE continues to post one of its strongest year-to-date performances in recent periods, the latest figures suggest that the market has entered a more challenging short-term phase.

GSE-CI Falls 0.85%

The benchmark GSE Composite Index was also under pressure, falling 126.54 points, equivalent to 0.85%, to close at 14,759.87 points.

The decline pushed the index further into negative territory across shorter timeframes.

The GSE-CI recorded a 1-week loss of 1.6%, while its 4-week performance showed a decline of 2.89%.

Despite these setbacks, the index remains significantly higher on a year-to-date basis, recording a remarkable gain of 68.29%.

This means that while investors have faced losses in recent sessions, the broader performance of the exchange remains substantially positive compared with the beginning of the year.

However, the latest decline could raise concerns among investors watching whether the market’s impressive rally can regain momentum.

Financial Stocks Also Take a Hit

The GSE Financial Stocks Index was not spared from the pressure.

The index declined by 0.31% to close at 7,836.00 points.

Its short-term performance also remained negative, with the index recording a 1-week loss of 0.65% and a 4-week decline of 2.48%.

Like the broader market, however, the financial stocks segment continues to boast a strong year-to-date performance.

The GSE-FSI has gained 68.62% since the beginning of the year, indicating that the recent weakness represents a pullback from a much stronger annual performance.

Trading Volume Plunges 25%

Investor activity also weakened significantly during the session.

A total of 3,087,928 shares changed hands, representing a market value of GH¢17.64 million.

Compared with the previous trading session on Wednesday, September 2, trading volume declined by 25%.

Turnover also suffered a major setback, dropping by 34% over the same period.

The simultaneous decline in both volume and turnover points to a significant reduction in trading activity as investors appeared more cautious during the session.

Across the market, 29 listed equities participated in trading.

However, only three stocks managed to record price gains, while nine equities ended the session in negative territory.

Trust Bank Gambia Leads Gainers

Trust Bank Gambia emerged as the strongest performer among the gainers, with its share price jumping 9.17% to close at GH¢1.31.

Digicut Production & Advertising followed closely, recording a 9.09% increase.

CalBank was the third gainer, advancing by 1.41%.

The strong gains recorded by Trust Bank Gambia and Digicut provided some relief in an otherwise difficult session for the market.

Dannex Ayrton Starwin Suffers Biggest Loss

On the losing side, Dannex Ayrton Starwin recorded the steepest decline.

The company’s share price fell by 9.46% to close at GH¢1.34.

ZEN Petroleum Holdings was the second-biggest decliner, losing 8.17%.

Intravenous Infusions also suffered a significant setback, falling 4.17%, while Ecobank Transnational declined by 2.17%.

The scale of the losses among some individual equities demonstrates the volatility currently being experienced across sections of the exchange.

MTN Ghana Dominates Trading Activity

MTN Ghana remained the most actively traded stock, accounting for approximately 2.3 million shares during the session.

Intravenous Infusions followed with 391,677 shares, while CalBank recorded 108,366 shares.

Kasapreko also featured prominently, recording 101,089 traded shares.

The heavy concentration of trading activity in MTN Ghana indicates the continued importance of the telecommunications giant to overall market liquidity.

Strong Annual Gains Face Fresh Test

Despite the latest selloff, the GSE remains firmly in positive territory for the year.

The 68.29% year-to-date gain recorded by the GSE Composite Index remains a significant achievement.

Similarly, the Financial Stocks Index has gained 68.62% since the beginning of the year.

However, the latest declines could test investor confidence if the negative short-term trend persists.

With the market losing GH¢2.4 billion in capitalisation and turnover falling sharply, investors will be watching upcoming sessions closely for signs of recovery.

The immediate question is whether the latest losses represent a temporary correction after a powerful rally or the beginning of a deeper market pullback.

For the time being, the Ghana Stock Exchange remains caught between impressive annual gains and growing short-term selling pressure.
