Member of Parliament for Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese and Spokesperson to the President of the Republic of Ghana, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has announced that President John Dramani Mahama is back with fresh investments in major, world-class health infrastructure, disclosing that land preparation has begun for the construction and equipping of a modern 400-bed Mother and Child Block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
According to Kwakye Ofosu, the new facility is designed to replace the hospital’s dilapidated Maternity Unit, marking a significant infrastructural upgrade for one of Ghana’s premier referral health institutions, which continues to serve as a critical destination for maternal and child healthcare services nationwide.
Kwakye Ofosu detailed the extensive range of specialised departments and units that will be incorporated into the new Mother and Child Block, positioning it as a comprehensive facility capable of addressing multiple dimensions of maternal, neonatal and reproductive healthcare under one roof.
“The 400-bed Mother and Child Block will replace the dilapidated Maternity Unit and significantly expand Korle Bu’s capacity to provide specialised maternal, neonatal and reproductive healthcare.”

Critical Care Capacity Significantly Expanded
Among the units outlined are Obstetrics and Gynaecology wards, Labour and Delivery suites, and dedicated Operating Theatres, forming the core clinical infrastructure needed to support safe childbirth and related surgical interventions.
The new block will also house a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a High Dependency Unit (HDU) and an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), reflecting a deliberate effort to strengthen the hospital’s capacity to manage critically ill mothers and newborns requiring intensive medical intervention.
This expanded critical care capacity is expected to significantly improve outcomes for high-risk pregnancies and complicated deliveries that require close monitoring and advanced life support.
Fertility And Reproductive Health Services Included
Notably, the facility will incorporate an IVF and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre, alongside dedicated Fertility and Reproductive Health Clinics, extending the hospital’s service offerings beyond conventional maternity care into specialised fertility treatment.
This addition aligns with a broader national trend toward expanding access to assisted reproductive technology within Ghana’s public health system, following similar recent developments at other major teaching hospitals.
The new block will further include Antenatal and Postnatal Clinics, alongside Breastfeeding and Family Planning Units, ensuring continuity of care for mothers throughout the full pregnancy and postpartum journey.
An Emergency Obstetric Care Unit has also been incorporated into the design, specifically intended to manage urgent complications arising during pregnancy or childbirth that require immediate medical response.
Beyond direct clinical care units, the facility will house a Diagnostic Imaging Department, alongside Laboratory and Blood Bank facilities, ensuring that essential diagnostic and testing services are readily available on-site to support timely clinical decision-making.
A dedicated Pharmacy Department has also been included, ensuring convenient access to necessary medications for patients receiving care within the block.
Sterilisation, Rehabilitation and Academic Facilities
The new Mother and Child Block will further incorporate a Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD), responsible for maintaining sterile medical equipment and instruments across the facility, alongside Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Units supporting patient recovery following childbirth or related medical procedures.
Notably, the block has also been designed to include Teaching, Research and Conference facilities, reflecting Korle Bu Teaching Hospital’s dual role as both a clinical care provider and a leading academic institution for medical education and research in Ghana.
The announcement addresses a longstanding concern regarding the condition of Korle Bu’s existing Maternity Unit, which has been widely described as dilapidated and increasingly inadequate to meet the demands of a hospital serving as a major national referral centre for maternal and child health services.
Replacing this ageing infrastructure with a modern, purpose-built 400-bed facility represents a substantial upgrade in both capacity and service quality for expectant mothers and newborns across the country.
