Major U.S. television networks suspended their pooled coverage of President Donald Trump on Monday after the White House barred CNN from serving as the designated television pool representative.

ABC News, CBS News, NBC News and Fox News joined CNN in the decision, marking an unusual show of unity among the outlets that traditionally rotate responsibility for capturing and sharing video of the president.

The five networks that form the White House television pool issued a joint statement explaining their move. “The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government,” they said. “No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting.”

The suspension followed the Trump administration’s decision to ban journalists from CNN, MS NOW and Politico from White House grounds. President Trump announced the ban on Friday, September 18, accusing the outlets of spreading “fake news.” On Saturday, reporters from the three organizations were denied entry and had their credentials deactivated or confiscated.

CNN had been scheduled to provide the primary television pool coverage on Monday, September 21, including for Trump’s events at the White House and his travel to New York for the United Nations General Assembly.

Instead of allowing another network to step in, the remaining members of the pool declined to replace CNN. Bryan Boughton, Fox News’ Washington bureau chief and the current chair of the television pool, informed members in an email that the pool would not cover events designated for presidential pool coverage. “There will be no replacement pool put in place,” he wrote. Coverage of other officials, including the vice president and members of Congress, was to continue as normal.

The White House television pool is a long-standing arrangement in which the five major networks take turns providing camera crews and sharing footage with other news organizations when space is limited or exclusive access is granted. The system has operated for decades and ensures that video of presidential events is distributed widely.

Network’s Reaction

By suspending participation, the networks effectively left many of Trump’s public appearances without the traditional independent television feed that news outlets around the world rely on.

The practical effects appeared quickly. During a Monday ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new White House helipad, the administration’s own livestream lacked clear audio of the president’s remarks because the professional boom microphones typically supplied by the pool were absent. The White House continued to provide its own video feed of events, which some observers referred to as “Trump TV,” but that feed is controlled by the administration rather than independent journalists.

CNN, MS NOW and Politico responded to the access ban by filing a federal lawsuit on Monday. In a joint statement, the three outlets said they were suing “to protect our First Amendment rights and defend the principle that the government does not decide what the press reports or publishes.” Their complaint argues that the ban violates the First Amendment and due process protections under the 14th Amendment.

Legal experts noted that while presidents have historically exercised some discretion over access, courts have generally required that restrictions not be based on the content of an outlet’s reporting.

President Trump defended the ban on Truth Social, writing that the White House was not assaulting the free press but targeting “FAKE NEWS.” He described critical coverage as a threat to national security. At an Oval Office briefing the previous Friday, Trump indicated the decision was cumulative rather than tied to any single story and suggested that other outlets, including The New York Times and The Washington Post, could face similar restrictions in the future.

The White House Correspondents’ Association condemned the ban. Jacqui Heinrich, the association’s president and a senior Fox News correspondent, stated that the administration cannot deny access arbitrarily or based on the content of reporting. Print, radio and still photography pools continued to operate, and secondary television crews designated by the White House were listed for some events.

Those secondary crews, however, are not obligated to distribute footage broadly in the same way as the primary network pool.

The episode represents a significant escalation in the long-running tension between the Trump administration and parts of the news media. Trump has frequently criticized mainstream outlets, and access disputes have occurred in previous administrations.

What made Monday’s development notable was the collective decision by the major networks, including Fox News, to withhold the pool feed rather than fill the gap left by CNN’s exclusion.

News organizations outside the television pool continued their reporting using available resources. Wire services, print reporters and photographers remained present for many events.

Still, the absence of a shared, independent television feed limited the visual and audio material available for broadcast and online coverage of the president’s activities.

As of Monday evening, it was not immediately clear how long the television pool suspension would last. The networks indicated they would provide updates as the situation developed. The lawsuit filed by CNN, MS NOW and Politico seeks to restore access and challenges the administration’s authority to exclude specific outlets on the grounds of unfavorable coverage.

The confrontation highlights ongoing questions about the balance between a president’s ability to manage access to the White House and the press’s role in informing the public. For decades, the pool system has served as a practical compromise that allows broad dissemination of presidential activities while accommodating space constraints.

By suspending that system in response to the exclusion of one of its members, the networks signaled that they view the ban as a threat to the principle of independent coverage.

Further developments are expected in both the legal challenge and the day-to-day logistics of covering the White House. The administration continues to stream its own video of events, while the major networks have made clear they will not provide the traditional pooled footage until the underlying access issue is resolved.

The outcome of the dispute will likely influence how presidential coverage is conducted for the remainder of the term and may set precedents for future administrations.
