In a significant step towards bolstering the capabilities of local enterprises, the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA) recently hosted a comprehensive two-day orientation session for a select group of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs).
This event was part of the Discovery to International Market (DIM) initiative, aimed at preparing businesses for the competitive landscape of international markets.
Ghana’s economic landscape is increasingly recognizing the importance of SMEs, which represent about 85% of all businesses and contribute significantly to job creation and economic growth.
However, many of these enterprises face challenges in accessing international markets, hampered by a lack of knowledge regarding export processes, international standards, and market dynamics.
The GEPA’s initiative directly addresses these issues, providing vital resources and support to entrepreneurs who extremely need the help to produce a global standard product to compete at the global market.
During the orientation session, participants had the opportunity to engage with GEPA’s management team, enabling them to share personal experiences and highlight the challenges they face in expanding into international markets.
The program included presentations on various topics essential for successful exporting, such as product enhancement, branding, effective packaging strategies, compliance with international standards, and overall market readiness.
“Understanding the International Market is Crucial for our Local Businesses,” said Afua Asante. This initiative will not only equip these SMEs with the necessary tools and knowledge but also empower them to improve their products and enhance their competitiveness globally.”

As SMEs strive to meet the expectations of diverse international consumers, GEPA’s commitment to facilitating this growth is evident.

The authority’s proactive engagement with business owners is designed to foster a supportive ecosystem conducive to export readiness.
The session also served as a platform for GEPA to gain insights into the specific challenges faced by the participating SMEs. Many entrepreneurs expressed difficulties regarding compliance with international standards, understanding market demands, and effectively marketing their products abroad.
This feedback is invaluable for GEPA as it seeks to tailor its support programs and interventions to the unique needs of the businesses.
Building on Existing Initiatives
The DIM initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Ghanaian government and GEPA to promote exports and diversify the economy. With an eye toward sustainability, the program aligns with international best practices, ensuring that Ghanaian products meet the quality and safety requirements required in competitive markets.
Ghana has seen significant opportunities in sectors such as cocoa, processed foods, textiles, and handicrafts.

However, as global competition intensifies, it becomes imperative for SMEs to adapt quickly to changing market dynamics and consumer preferences.
GEPA’s support is therefore critical in helping these enterprises refine their offerings and achieve greater market penetration.
Ghana’s Trade Landscape is Promising
Despite the challenges, there are promising trends in Ghana’s export landscape. The country is gradually becoming a focal point for trade in West Africa, thanks to its rich natural resources and strategic location.
Initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) present new opportunities for Ghanaian exporters to expand into continental and global markets. An initiative to reach out to a wider audience.
The government’s commitment to providing an enabling environment for trade, including investments in infrastructure and services, has been instrumental in fostering a conducive atmosphere for SMEs.
However, continuous support through training and capacity building initiatives remains essential to ensure that they come out with the best product for clients and consumers.
Looking Ahead with Much Optimism for the Future
Participants left with a renewed sense of purpose and optimism about their future in international trade. The insights gained and connections made with GEPA will undoubtedly pave the way for sustainable growth and export success.
They were encouraged to seek for assistance and needed consultations to be successful in their endeavours with a clearer vision to do more in ensuring that their products can compete internationally.
The GEPA is poised to continue its efforts in supporting SMEs through various programs and initiatives. By investing in the development of these enterprises, the authority not only enhances their individual prospects but also contributes significantly to Ghana’s economic resilience and growth.
The recent orientation session held by the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), marks a pivotal moment for SMEs in the country, equipping them with the skills, knowledge, and support needed to thrive in international markets.
In conclusion, the ongoing engagement underscores GEPA’s commitment to promoting a thriving export sector, one capable of competing effectively on the global stage, ultimately benefiting the Ghanaian economy as a whole.
