Nigerian singer-songwriter Adekunle Gold has been announced as a headliner for shows at the newly opened Blue Note London on November 23 and 24, marking him as the first Afrobeats artist to perform at the iconic jazz club’s UK outpost.

The announcement, which circulated widely on social media on September 28, positions the multi-platinum star for two nights of performances at the Covent Garden venue. Promotional material confirms shows at 19:00 and 21:00 on both dates.

Gold, often called AG Baby by fans, will bring his distinctive blend of Afrobeats, highlife, and soulful songwriting to a space long associated with jazz tradition and boundary-pushing live music.

Blue Note London opened its doors on September 23, 2026, the 100th anniversary of John Coltrane’s birth on St Martin’s Lane in the heart of the West End. It is the first UK location for the legendary Blue Note brand, which began in New York’s Greenwich Village and has expanded to cities including Tokyo, Los Angeles, Milan, and others.

The intimate basement venue features a main room with a capacity of around 250 to 280, hosting two shows most nights, alongside a smaller B-Side space planned for emerging talent. Programming deliberately spans jazz and adjacent genres, including R&B, hip-hop, and global sounds, with early bookings featuring Robert Glasper (the club’s creative ambassador), Erykah Badu, Jamie Cullum, Nubya Garcia, Yussef Dayes, and KOKOROKO.

Gold’s booking continues the venue’s interest in genre-crossing artists while representing a notable first for Afrobeats. The genre, which has surged from Nigerian roots to global dominance through stars such as Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido, has increasingly found homes in prestigious international stages. Gold’s appearance underscores that expansion into classic jazz institutions.

Born Adekunle Almoruf Kosoko in Lagos in 1987, Gold first gained widespread attention with his 2015 single “Sade,” a highlife-inflected cover of One Direction’s “Story of My Life.” Signed initially to YBNL Nation, he released the debut album Gold, which reached No. 7 on the Billboard World Albums chart.

Subsequent projects including About 30 (Grammy-shortlisted in the Best World Music Album category), Afro Pop Vol. 1, Catch Me If You Can, and Tequila Ever After (his Def Jam debut) showcased evolving artistry that mixes traditional Nigerian influences with contemporary production. His 2025 album Fuji titled as an acronym for Finding Uncharted Journeys Inside further explored fuji, apala, and related sounds while featuring collaborations that highlighted his range.

Gold has already demonstrated comfort bridging African popular music and more formal concert settings. In November 2025 he closed the EFG London Jazz Festival at the Royal Festival Hall with the Guildhall Session Orchestra, becoming the first Nigerian artist to headline an orchestral performance at the event and only the second African after Angélique Kidjo.

That sold-out night featured reimagined versions of songs such as “High,” “Many People,” and material from Fuji, earning praise for its fusion of Afrobeats rhythms with symphonic textures. He later brought a similar orchestral concept to Lagos, headlining the refurbished National Theatre. These experiences position him well for the more intimate, supper-club atmosphere of Blue Note, where audiences sit close to the stage and the focus remains on live musicianship.

The timing also aligns with Gold’s continued international presence. He has performed at major festivals and venues across Europe, North America, and beyond, amassing billions of streams and building a dedicated diaspora following. His music often explores personal themes including his experiences with sickle cell disease alongside romance, celebration, and cultural pride, giving it emotional resonance that translates across audiences.

For Blue Note London, the booking signals an early commitment to reflecting London’s multicultural music scene and the global evolution of jazz-adjacent sounds. The club’s operators have emphasized creating a space for both established icons and artists who push stylistic boundaries.

Pairing a leading Afrobeats voice with the Blue Note name continues a tradition of the brand embracing innovation while honoring its roots in intimate, high-caliber live performance.

Public Reaction

Fans and industry observers have reacted positively to the news, viewing it as further validation of Afrobeats’ artistic depth beyond pure commercial success. In recent years the genre has moved from club and festival circuits into orchestras, jazz festivals, and now one of the most storied names in jazz clubs. Gold’s previous orchestral work suggests he is likely to approach the Blue Note dates with arrangements that highlight both his catalog’s melodic strengths and rhythmic drive suited to a smaller room.

Tickets and full details are expected through the Blue Note London website and usual ticketing channels. With two shows each night across two dates, demand from both the local Nigerian and African diaspora communities and broader London music audiences is anticipated to be strong.

The performances will offer an early look at how Afrobeats sits within the evolving programming of a classic jazz institution in one of the world’s great music cities.

Adekunle Gold’s Blue Note London engagement adds another milestone to a career defined by steady artistic growth and cross-cultural appeal. As the first Afrobeats artist to take the stage at the new club, he continues to expand the spaces where Nigerian popular music is heard and celebrated.
