Intergenerational Gathering of Women in Film and Television

Women working across film and television in Ghana and beyond will gather this week for a focused intergenerational event designed to foster connection, mentorship and celebration of their contributions to the industry. Titled “Someone Talking to Someone: An Intergenerational Gathering of Women in Film & Television,” the free two-day programme takes place on 9 and 10 October 2026 at the Alliance Française d’Accra.

Organised under the banner of the Ndiva Women’s Film Festival (NWFF), the gathering carries the simple yet powerful tagline “Connect | Mentor | Celebrate.” Entry is completely free, lowering barriers for emerging talents, students, established professionals and industry supporters alike. The event is implemented with support from German Cooperation through GIZ, the Alliance Française Accra-Ghana, the Embassy of Mexico in Ghana, and the Ghana Academy of Film and Television Arts (GAFTA).

The Ndiva Women’s Film Festival, founded in 2017 by filmmaker and National Film and Television Institute lecturer Aseye Tamakloe, has long served as a dedicated platform for women in cinema. Its core mandate is to create space for networking, collaboration, exhibition and market access while celebrating work that reflects women’s experiences of the world.

The festival traditionally screens films in three categories: films directed by women, films made by women specifically for women audiences, and films by men about women. After editions in 2017, 2018 and 2019, and a return in 2024 and 2025 following pandemic-related pauses, NWFF continues to amplify African and diaspora women’s voices in storytelling.

This October’s intergenerational gathering builds directly on that foundation by prioritising dialogue across generations. The image of women seated on stage with microphones, engaged in conversation under purple lighting, captures the spirit of the event: experienced practitioners sharing hard-won insights with newer voices, and younger filmmakers offering fresh perspectives on technology, distribution and audience engagement in a rapidly changing media landscape.

In Ghana’s film and television sector, women have made significant strides yet continue to face structural challenges. Access to funding, technical training, leadership roles and consistent market opportunities remains uneven. Intergenerational spaces address these gaps practically. Veteran directors, producers, cinematographers, editors and writers can demystify the business side of the industry, discuss navigating male-dominated sets, and offer guidance on sustaining creative careers.

Emerging talents, in turn, bring knowledge of digital platforms, social media storytelling and contemporary audience tastes that can invigorate established practices.

The choice of Alliance Française d’Accra as venue is significant. The cultural centre has hosted previous NWFF activities and remains a key partner in Accra’s creative ecosystem. Its facilities support both formal panel discussions and informal networking, allowing conversations to flow naturally from structured sessions into lasting professional relationships.

Partners such as GIZ and the Mexican Embassy signal international recognition of the value of strengthening women’s participation in Ghana’s creative industries, while GAFTA’s involvement anchors the gathering firmly within local professional structures.

Public Expectation

Organisers emphasise that the gathering is not merely celebratory. By placing “mentor” at the centre of the theme, they signal an intentional transfer of knowledge and opportunity. Participants can expect conversations that move beyond inspiration into practical territory: how to pitch projects, how to build sustainable production companies, how to advocate for better working conditions, and how to ensure that women’s stories reach both local and global screens.

The broader context is encouraging. Across Africa, women filmmakers are increasingly visible at major festivals and on streaming platforms. Ghanaian productions continue to gain traction regionally, and initiatives that deliberately connect generations help ensure that progress is cumulative rather than isolated. When older practitioners pass on institutional knowledge and younger ones introduce innovative approaches, the entire ecosystem benefits.

Attendance is open and free, reflecting NWFF’s consistent commitment to accessibility. The presence of international partners also opens potential pathways for cross-border collaboration and visibility.

As Ghana’s creative economy continues to expand, events such as this play a quiet but essential role. They convert individual ambition into collective strength. They turn isolated struggles into shared strategies. And they affirm that women’s contributions to film and television deserve not only recognition but sustained investment in relationships and skills.

The two days at Alliance Française d’Accra are expected to generate conversations that extend well beyond the venue. Participants will leave with new contacts, fresh ideas and a clearer sense of belonging to a community that spans generations. In an industry that thrives on storytelling, the most powerful stories may well emerge from the simple act of someone talking to someone else across the table.

Those interested in attending are encouraged to make their way to Alliance Française d’Accra on 9 and 10 October. No registration fee is required. The doors are open for connection, mentorship and celebration of women shaping the future of Ghanaian and African screen storytelling.
