United States President Donald Trump has announced plans for extensive oil, gas and mineral exploration in Greenland, highlighting the Arctic island’s resource potential and strategic importance following a security agreement with Denmark and Greenland.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said that large-scale exploration was preparing to begin in the self-governing Danish territory, which he described as holding substantial reserves of easily accessible oil.
“Massive Oil, Gas, and Mineral Exploration is getting ready to begin in our new and beautiful Greenland! The amount of easily available Oil is far greater than that of almost … anywhere in the World.”

Trump’s announcement places renewed attention on Greenland’s natural resources, which have featured prominently in discussions about the island’s economic potential and strategic significance. However, his post did not provide details about the companies involved, the proposed exploration timeline or the scale of any planned operations.
The announcement comes after Trump reached a security agreement last month with the leaders of Denmark and Greenland, aimed at strengthening the United States’ military presence on the strategically located island.

The agreement provides for an expanded US military role, including a pathway for two additional military bases and Trump’s proposed “Golden Dome” missile defence system. At the same time, it reaffirms Danish sovereignty over Greenland and the right of Greenlanders to self-determination.
The deal followed an almost two-year crisis triggered by Trump’s refusal to rule out using force to take control of Greenland, raising concerns over relations between Washington and its European allies.
Trump Hails Greenland’s Strategic Importance
In his latest statement, Trump also praised the security benefits of the agreement for both the United States and Europe, describing Greenland’s strategic position as exceptional. “Greenland ‘from a Security Purpose in the Defense and Offense of both the United States of America, and Europe, is second to none,’” he wrote on Truth Social.
The US President argued that Greenland’s location would be crucial in detecting and responding to potential aerial attacks against the United States.
“Any future attack on the United States will have to come across Greenland, where our defence will routinely knock down drones, missiles, or any other form of weapon not yet even conceived.”

He added that the island offered advantages in monitoring potential threats, stating, “It gives us time, location, and sightline, like nowhere else in the world!”

The comments emphasize the strategic importance Washington attaches to Greenland because of its position in the Arctic and its potential role in missile detection and defence. The island lies between North America and Europe, making it relevant to military planning involving the North Atlantic and Arctic regions.
The proposed expansion of US military facilities is intended to strengthen defence capabilities in the area, while the Golden Dome initiative forms part of Trump’s broader plans for a missile defence system.
Although Trump’s latest post focused partly on energy and mineral exploration, he linked the island’s resource potential with its wider importance to American security interests.
There was no immediate response to the US President’s announcement from the leaders of Greenland or Denmark.
Security Agreement Awaits Legislative Approval
The security agreement between the United States, Denmark and Greenland remains subject to further legislative steps in Greenland.
The arrangement is expected to undergo a second reading in Greenland’s parliament before being put to a vote, with lawmakers expected to pass the legislation.
Its provisions seek to expand American military activities while maintaining Denmark’s sovereignty and recognising Greenlanders’ right to determine their own future.
Denmark retains sovereignty over Greenland, which governs many of its domestic affairs. Decisions concerning the island’s future have also been shaped by Greenlanders’ right to self-determination, a principle reaffirmed in the security agreement.
Trump’s announcement of planned resource exploration introduces another dimension to the relationship, highlighting the potential economic significance of Greenland alongside its military value.
However, his statement did not establish whether exploration activities had received all necessary approvals or whether specific projects had secured the required permits. Details of the proposed operations, including their ownership, financing and environmental implications, were not provided.
For now, the announcement signals Trump’s continued interest in Greenland’s energy and mineral resources as Washington pursues a larger military role on the island.
The next steps will depend on the development of exploration plans and the progress of the security agreement through Greenland’s legislative process. How the proposed initiatives proceed will also be shaped by the arrangements governing Greenland’s resources, sovereignty and self-determination.
