FirstBank Ghana Commits to Better Banking as Customer Demands Evolve

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of FirstBank Ghana, Osahon Ogieva

FirstBank Ghana has pledged to strengthen its customer service delivery as changing expectations push financial institutions to rethink how they serve clients, respond to complaints and build lasting relationships.

The commitment was made during the bank’s 2026 Customer Service Week forum, held at the African Regent Hotel in Accra under the theme “The Extra Mile”. The event brought together customers, management and staff to discuss their banking experiences, expectations and areas where improvements are needed.

The forum offered customers an opportunity to share their concerns directly with the bank’s leadership, while management used the engagement to reaffirm its commitment to making customer feedback a central part of its decisions.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of FirstBank Ghana, Osahon Ogieva, said the bank must ensure that the concerns raised during the discussions translate into meaningful improvements in service delivery.

His remarks come at a time when customers increasingly expect convenient transactions, faster responses, reliable digital platforms and effective solutions when problems arise.

FirstBank Ghana Faces Growing Pressure to Improve Customer Experience

Customer expectations in banking continue to evolve as technology reshapes how people access financial services. Customers are no longer concerned only about the safety of their deposits. They also expect banking transactions to be convenient, responsive and tailored to their needs.

These changing demands are putting pressure on financial institutions to improve service standards across branches, digital platforms and other customer channels.

Speaking at the forum, Mr Ogieva stressed that feedback from customers should continue to influence the bank’s decisions long after the Customer Service Week celebrations have ended.

“Your voice should not end with today’s conversation. It must continue to inform how we serve, how we improve and how we make decisions that affect your experience with FirstBank. Your voice, experience and relationship matter, which is why we say You First.”

The statement places customer feedback at the centre of the bank’s service improvement agenda. It also raises expectations about how management will respond to the issues customers brought forward during the engagement.

For customers, the real test will be whether their concerns lead to practical changes in the way they interact with the bank, particularly when seeking assistance, resolving transaction problems or accessing banking services.

Trust Remains Central to FirstBank Ghana’s Strategy

Mr Ogieva also highlighted the importance of trust in banking, noting that financial institutions carry a significant responsibility in managing customers’ money, supporting businesses and helping individuals achieve their financial goals.

Trust is a critical factor in the relationship between banks and their customers. While competitive products and digital convenience can attract clients, consistent service delivery and reliable support are essential to maintaining those relationships.

A customer who encounters repeated delays or struggles to resolve an issue may begin questioning the quality of service, even when the bank offers products that meet their financial needs.

FirstBank Ghana’s emphasis on its “You First” philosophy reflects an effort to position customers at the centre of product development, service delivery and decision-making.

However, translating that philosophy into a stronger customer experience requires more than statements of commitment. It demands consistent attention to complaints, clear communication and accountability across the organisation.

Mr Ogieva explained that going the extra mile involved listening carefully, taking responsibility for customer concerns, following up on unresolved issues and identifying better ways to serve.

His remarks suggest that the bank’s approach to customer service extends beyond responding to complaints after they occur. It also involves identifying weaknesses in existing processes and making improvements that prevent similar problems from recurring.

FirstBank Ghana Promises Attention to Customer Concerns

Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer, Titilayo Balogun, thanked customers for sharing their experiences and assured them that the issues raised would receive attention and responses from the bank.

She emphasised the importance of continued engagement in strengthening trust and developing lasting customer relationships.

Management also acknowledged that some issues might take time to resolve but pledged to listen, learn and take appropriate action.

The acknowledgement recognises that not every banking concern can be addressed immediately. Some problems may require technical adjustments, internal reviews or changes to established processes. Nevertheless, keeping customers informed and providing timely responses can help reduce frustration while solutions are being developed.

The effectiveness of the bank’s pledge will therefore depend partly on how it manages the period between receiving a complaint and delivering a resolution.

Customers generally want to know that their concerns have been received, that someone is responsible for addressing them and that they will receive updates when a solution takes longer than expected.

Technology and Staff Development to Drive Better Banking

FirstBank Ghana has also indicated that it will continue investing in its people, processes and technology to make banking simpler, faster and more convenient across its customer channels.

Such investments are increasingly important as banks balance traditional branch services with digital banking options. Technology can help reduce transaction delays, simplify routine processes and make assistance more accessible, provided that systems remain reliable and customers can obtain support when difficulties arise.

Staff development is equally important. Employees who understand customer needs and have the authority to address problems can help resolve issues more efficiently while creating a more positive banking experience.

The bank’s commitment also recognises that customer service is not solely the responsibility of frontline employees or dedicated service teams. Decisions made across operations, technology, finance and management can all influence the quality of service customers receive.

The Real Test Begins After Customer Service Week

FirstBank Ghana’s 2026 Customer Service Week forum has provided a platform for customers to express their expectations and for management to outline its service commitments.

The next challenge is turning those discussions into measurable improvements that customers can experience in their everyday banking activities.

Faster responses, clearer communication, more convenient transactions and effective complaint resolution could help strengthen customer confidence if consistently delivered.

As banking expectations continue to change, FirstBank Ghana will need to demonstrate that its “You First” philosophy goes beyond a slogan and shapes the decisions that affect customers.

Ultimately, the bank’s success will be judged not simply by the promises made during Customer Service Week, but by whether customers notice a meaningful difference in the quality, speed and reliability of the services they receive.
