Ghana has secured a place at the 2026 CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after overcoming Nigeria 7-4 in the second leg of their qualifying tie to advance 10-7 on aggregate.
The Black Sharks will return to the continental showpiece in Senegal after missing out on establishing an advantage in the first leg, which ended 3-3 on Nigerian soil.
With qualification hanging in the balance, Ghana produced the decisive performance at home, scoring seven goals to put the Sand Eagles away and end their hopes of reaching the tournament.
The emphatic victory settles a fiercely contested West African rivalry and gives Ghana an opportunity to measure their progress against the continent’s strongest beach soccer nations.
For the Black Sharks, the result also provides a boost ahead of a competition in which they will seek to improve on their previous performances and establish themselves among Africa’s leading teams.
The 2026 tournament will be staged in Senegal from November 7 to 15. Beyond the continental title, the competition carries additional significance, with the two finalists earning Africa’s places at the 2027 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup.
Ghana Target Better Finish After Return
Ghana’s qualification continues the team’s efforts to build a more consistent presence at the continental level.

The Black Sharks first appeared at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2015 and returned for the 2016 edition. However, they endured a lengthy absence before qualifying for the 2024 tournament in Egypt.
Their campaign in Egypt ended with a fifth-place finish, the best result in the country’s history at the competition.
Ghana struggled in their opening matches against Egypt and Morocco, missing out on a place in the semi-finals. They responded emphatically against Tanzania, recording a 10-3 victory before defeating Mozambique 5-3 in the classification match to conclude the tournament on a positive note.
Those results improved on their seventh-place finishes in 2015 and 2016, offering encouragement that Ghana could become more competitive with regular participation and improved preparation.
The 2026 finals will give the team another opportunity to build on that performance. However, progressing beyond the group stage and challenging for a place in the final will require consistency against opponents with considerably more experience at the highest level.
Senegal Presents Major Test for Ghana
The Black Sharks will face a difficult assignment in Senegal, where the hosts will be seeking to extend their dominance of African beach soccer.
Senegal have won the last five editions of the Africa Cup of Nations, lifting the trophy in 2016, 2018, 2021, 2022 and 2024. Their record makes them the team to beat as they prepare to defend their title on home sand.

Morocco and Egypt are also established contenders, while Mauritania emerged as a serious challenger after reaching the final in their debut appearance in 2024.
Ghana’s immediate achievement is securing qualification, but the scale of the challenge awaiting them in Senegal is clear. The team must now turn its attention to preparations, with the aim of translating its attacking performance against Nigeria into a competitive display at the finals.
The prospect of reaching the 2027 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup adds further motivation. Finishing among the top two teams in Senegal would secure Ghana a place on the global stage, making the tournament an opportunity to achieve more than a return to continental competition.
