Black Starlets’ U-17 AFCON Miss Exposes Ghana’s Decline

Black Starlets will not be at 2027 U17 AFCON

Ghana’s Black Starlets have missed out on qualification for the 2027 CAF Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast in the semi-finals of the 2026 WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship in Burkina Faso on Tuesday.

The defeat extends Ghana’s disappointing run at youth level, with the two-time African champions set to miss the continental tournament for the fourth time in five editions, raising fresh concerns about the country’s declining competitiveness in a competition it once dominated.

Only the two finalists at the WAFU Zone B championship qualify automatically for the U-17 AFCON, leaving Ghana with no route to the tournament in Morocco after their semi-final elimination.

The result is another setback for a nation whose pedigree in youth football once made it one of Africa’s leading forces. Ghana won the U-17 AFCON in 1995 and 1999, but their last triumph came more than 27 years ago, when the Black Starlets defeated Burkina Faso 2-0 in the final in Burkina Faso.

Since that second continental crown, Ghana have struggled to reproduce the consistency and dominance that defined their earlier success, with repeated qualification failures and disappointing tournament campaigns highlighting the gap between their historic reputation and present standing.

Red card proves costly

Ghana’s hopes of extending their campaign at the WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship ended at the 4th August Stadium in Ouagadougou, where defender Daniel Owusu was sent off in the 17th minute for a tackle on an Ivorian striker.

The dismissal forced head coach Kassim Mingle Ocansey to reorganise his side early in the contest, leaving the Starlets with the difficult task of competing against Ivory Coast with 10 players for most of the match.

Despite the setback, Ghana remained organised and created opportunities to take the lead. Striker Alidu Issah, however, failed to convert a promising chance, as the Starlets struggled to turn their attacking efforts into goals.

The Ivorians eventually capitalised on their numerical advantage in the 76th minute, with Alex Fousseni Bamba firing home from close range to settle the contest.

Ghana attempted to respond in the closing stages, but David Kwarteng narrowly missed the target after controlling a pass from Prince Apam, allowing Ivory Coast to protect their lead and secure qualification.

Ocansey admitted afterwards that the outcome was particularly painful because he believed his team had been capable of winning before Owusu’s dismissal.

“It was a game we could have won. It was a game we were controlling until the red card on the 17th minute. Even after that, we created some good chances but missed them. And considering the time Ivory Coast scored, it’s really painful.”

Unbeaten campaign ends in disappointment

The defeat was particularly frustrating given Ghana’s performances in the group stage, where they finished unbeaten after victories over Togo and Benin and a draw against hosts Burkina Faso.

However, their inability to convert that promising run into a place in the final means they will be absent from the 2027 U-17 AFCON, scheduled to take place in Morocco.

The outcome also reinforces Ghana’s growing difficulties at this level. The Black Starlets featured at the 2025 U-17 AFCON but failed to progress beyond the group stage after finishing level on points with Algeria and losing out through a draw of lots.

Their latest failure to qualify highlights a worrying inconsistency for a country with a celebrated youth football tradition.

Ghana won the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 1991 and 1995 and claimed the African U-17 championship in 1995 and 1999. Their last African title came in 1999, while their most recent FIFA U-17 World Cup triumph was in 1995. The distinction matters because Ghana’s historic achievements across the two competitions are sometimes conflated.

The latest disappointment raises questions about the consistency of Ghana’s youth development system, the preparation of emerging players and the ability to translate promising performances into results when qualification is at stake.

Although the red card significantly affected Tuesday’s match, Ghana’s missed opportunities also proved costly. Their inability to score despite creating chances ultimately left them with no reward for an otherwise competitive performance.

Focus shifts to third-place playoff

With qualification now beyond their reach, Ocansey and his players must turn their attention to the third-place playoff against Burkina Faso, who lost their semi final clash against Niger.

Niger and Ivory Coast will compete in the final of the WAFU B U-17 Championship after both secured the two tickets to the CAF U-17 AFCON from WAFU Zone B.

The match offers an opportunity for Ghana to finish the competition on a positive note, although victory would do little to soften the disappointment of missing out on the continental tournament.

For the Black Starlets, the immediate challenge is to recover from the defeat and learn from the mistakes that proved decisive against Ivory Coast.

The longer-term task is more demanding. Ghana must find a way to rebuild the consistency that once made their youth teams a major force in African football.

Their history provides evidence of what the country can achieve, but past titles cannot guarantee future success. Unless Ghana can turn their talent and competitive potential into sustained results, their absence from major youth tournaments risks becoming an increasingly familiar outcome rather than an occasional setback.
