Fitch Upgrades Outlooks of Access, Zenith, UBA, GT and Six Others

Fitch Upgrades Outlooks of Access, Zenith, UBA, GT and Six Others

Fitch Ratings has revised the Outlooks of 11 financial institutions to Positive from Stable as the country’s economic reforms begin to reshape perceptions of its creditworthiness.

The international credit rating agency affirmed the Long-Term Issuer Default Ratings (IDRs) of the affected institutions at ‘B’, while changing their Outlooks to Positive. The development places some of Nigeria’s most prominent financial institutions, including Access Bank, Zenith Bank, United Bank for Africa (UBA) and Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), under a more favourable credit assessment.

Other institutions benefiting from the revision include First HoldCo Plc, First Bank of Nigeria Ltd, Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc, Fidelity Bank, First City Monument Bank, Wema Bank and Bank of Industry.

The decision comes at a critical period as policymakers seek to sustain economic reforms, strengthen financial stability and convince investors that recent policy changes can deliver lasting improvements.

Although the ratings themselves remain unchanged, the positive Outlooks suggest Fitch sees a potentially stronger credit environment emerging for the affected institutions.

Fitch’s Positive Outlook

According to Fitch, the Outlook revisions follow a similar action on Nigeria’s ‘B’ Long-Term Issuer Default Ratings.

The agency’s assessment reflects ongoing reforms to the country’s policy framework and increased confidence that the momentum behind those changes will not be disrupted by upcoming elections.

That consideration is particularly important in an economy where policy consistency, foreign exchange management, inflation control and investor confidence influence the operating environment for financial institutions.

Banks do not operate in isolation from the wider economy. Changes in government policy, currency movements, economic growth and the financial health of borrowers can affect their ability to generate income, manage risks and maintain strong balance sheets.

However, the distinction between an improved Outlook and an actual rating upgrade remains important. The institutions retain their ‘B’ Long-Term IDRs, meaning Fitch has not yet raised their underlying ratings.

Instead, the Positive Outlook indicates that a future improvement in ratings may be possible if the conditions underpinning the agency’s assessment continue to strengthen.

Access, Zenith, UBA and GT Banks Among Major Beneficiaries

The inclusion of Access Bank, Zenith Bank, UBA and GTB places several of Nigeria’s most recognisable banking brands among the institutions receiving the favourable assessment.

These banks operate in an environment where changes in monetary policy, foreign exchange conditions and business confidence can significantly influence lending activity, deposit mobilisation and profitability.

A more supportive operating environment could help financial institutions manage credit risks, improve the resilience of their portfolios and expand their capacity to support businesses and households.

The revision also covers their respective holding companies where applicable, including Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc and First HoldCo Plc.

Fidelity Bank, FCMB and Wema Bank are also included, extending the positive Outlook adjustment across a broader section of Nigeria’s commercial banking industry.

Nevertheless, the revision does not automatically guarantee stronger earnings, increased lending or lower borrowing costs. Those outcomes will depend on individual banks’ financial performance, asset quality, capital positions and the broader economic conditions in which they operate.

The decision instead points to a potentially more favourable external environment in which these institutions could demonstrate stronger creditworthiness over time.

First HoldCo and First Bank Benefit From Capital Compliance

Beyond the improving sovereign and operating environment, Fitch identified a specific development supporting the Outlook revisions for First HoldCo Plc and First Bank of Nigeria Ltd.

The agency said the revisions were supported by the issuers having restored compliance with the total capital adequacy ratio (CAR) requirement.

Capital adequacy is a key measure of a bank’s capacity to absorb financial losses while continuing to meet its obligations. Maintaining the required capital buffers is essential to protecting depositors, supporting lending activities and preserving confidence in the financial system.

Restoring compliance therefore represents an important step for the two institutions as they work to strengthen their financial positions.

The development also highlights the importance of bank-specific improvements alongside broader economic reforms. While a stronger sovereign credit profile can improve the environment in which banks operate, individual institutions must still demonstrate adequate capital, sound risk management and sustainable financial performance.

Fitch’s assessment suggests that First HoldCo and First Bank have made progress on an important regulatory requirement, providing additional support for their improved Outlooks.
