Grammy-winning rapper Cardi B spoke out forcefully against bullying in New York City schools following the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Ghanaian student Javits Frimpong in the Bronx.

Javits Frimpong, also referred to in some posts as Jarvits, was a 15-year-old who had moved from Ghana to the Bronx about a year earlier to live with his father, Thomas Frimpong, a yellow cab driver. The teenager enrolled at DreamYard Preparatory School and reportedly aspired to become a doctor.

On the morning of October 29, 2026, while walking to school near East 171st Street and Crotona Place in the Claremont section of the Bronx, close to Crotona Park, he was shot once in the abdomen. Surveillance footage captured him being chased by a teenager in black clothing. He ran roughly a block before collapsing and was rushed by police to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police have described three teenage suspects, reportedly wearing black sweatsuits and blue surgical masks, who fled the scene. As of early November, no arrests had been publicly announced. Thomas Frimpong has stated that his son had been bullied at school in the days leading up to the shooting and that the principal informed him two students were suspended for a week following an incident.

The father has linked the bullying to the attack, though authorities have not confirmed a motive or a direct connection.

Public Reaction

The killing has drawn attention from local officials and the broader community. Vigils were held near the site, and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that he had spoken with President Donald Trump, who agreed to grant an immediate visa to Javits’s mother so she could travel from Ghana to say goodbye to her son.

Representative Ritchie Torres expressed condolences and called for those responsible to be held accountable, urging anyone with information to contact NYPD Crime Stoppers.

Cardi B, a Bronx native, addressed the tragedy during an Instagram Live session shortly after the shooting. She condemned the bullying of immigrant children, stating that newcomers from places such as Africa and the Dominican Republic are often targeted by “everybody,” including peers from similar backgrounds.

The rapper questioned the mindset of anyone who would wake up and decide to kill someone who had not harmed them. Drawing from her own experiences growing up, she described how persistent bullying can push young people toward gangs for protection and warned that the cycle starts as early as first grade.

“What happened to Javits is the reason why I would never raise a kid in the Bronx,” Cardi B said, adding that she would not raise children in Harlem, Washington Heights, or New York public schools more broadly. She urged parents to teach kindness, arguing that it begins at home, and criticized those who dismiss teachers’ concerns about their children’s behavior.

She also suggested that families considering a move to the East Coast consider places like Pennsylvania instead of New York City.

Her comments resonated widely and were covered by major music and news outlets. They centered on systemic issues of youth violence, school safety, and the particular vulnerabilities faced by immigrant students rather than any personal financial pledges.

No credible reports from Cardi B’s team, mainstream news organizations, or her verified social media channels have substantiated claims of purchasing property, vehicles, or creating a six-figure fund for the Frimpong family.

The discrepancy highlights how quickly unverified statements can spread online in the aftermath of high-profile tragedies. While the viral post generated significant engagement and supportive replies praising the purported generosity, it does not align with documented statements from the artist.

Cardi B’s Philanthropy

Cardi B has a history of philanthropic gestures, including buying her mother a house years earlier and supporting her former school, but those actions were publicly confirmed by her at the time.

Javits Frimpong’s death has renewed conversations about gun violence in New York City, anti-bullying measures in schools, and the challenges of integrating newly arrived immigrant youth. His father has spoken publicly about the pain of losing a child who left Ghana seeking better opportunities. Community members and Ghanaian diaspora voices have called for justice and stronger protections for students.

As the investigation continues, police continue to seek information leading to the identification and arrest of the suspects. The Frimpong family is mourning a quiet, intelligent boy whose life was cut short far from home. Cardi B’s verified remarks have amplified attention on the bullying concerns raised by the father, keeping the focus on prevention and accountability rather than unconfirmed financial offers.

The case highlights the human cost of street violence and the need for accurate information amid grief. Officials and advocates stress that tips from the public remain essential to resolving the investigation. For the Frimpong family, no amount of support can restore what was lost, but sustained attention on school safety and community responsibility may help prevent similar tragedies.
